Staying 4 nights in this ryokan backpacker gives us great experiences. This ryokan is in an alley not far away from Kyoto Station (5-8 minutes walk). Simply exit station from the north gate then turn left passing 2 traffic lights. The alley just across of Omron Building. The staff was great and friendly. 'Home made' printed guidance for tourist was... More

We decided to book this place because it offers a Japanese-style room. The room is so clean, the mattress comfortable, and the bathtub is so deep and comfortable. This place also allows us to arrive after midnight. Due to flight arrival, we arrived Kyoto past midnight. The staff has left the keys for us to enter our room without any... More

Backpackers' Ryokan Budget Inn has hostel type rooms for travelers and separate "suites". I stayed in the "suite" style room. The room consists of a bathroom closet, shower, two closets and a space to place your luggage. The main room has a table and comes with 5 Japanese style beds on tatami mats. The room has cable and Wifi. I... More

The manager was really pleasant, helpful, polite and spoke excellent English - he provided us with a lot of helpful information about Kyoto's attractions and how to get to them (bus stops, directions etc). He also provided us with the locations of nearby shops/restaurants and which ones were best value for money. My husband is a vegetarian and the manager... More

The staff would deserve 100% tip for everything, but as it's a budget accommodation, the guests don't have the money. The place had just the right things, most importantly great location, and not anything a budget traveler would not like to pay for. What made this place so special, was the English speaking friendly staff with actually useful information about... More

Definitely will stay here again. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The room is large for the three of us. The mats, pillows, and comforters are comfortable. We have our own shower, bath, toilet, and kitchen sink. Shampoo and body wash are provided. The shower is very comfortable. Everything is very clean. We got daily room cleaning and set... More

If you travel in Kyoto you may realize that the trip to almost any tourist site starts at Kyoto station, so the location about 10-15 min. away was convenient. It was also near multiple convenience stores and several small restaurants, so it was easy to find food nearby. The best part of the hotel was its super friendly staff and... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
