Like it was said before, very central, very clean. We stayed on the second floor. Although we payed in cash, we didn't get any breakfast (except yogurt). When we asked to leave our luggage before check-in time, it was o.k., but when we wanted to leave it after check-out time, they charged us with 400 JPY.

We booked through JNTO in Tokyo and it was the fifth place they tried as the others didn't have availability. It was very easy to find coming off of the Shijo south entrance subway stop- the directions from JNTO were spot-on. As many others have written before, the owners are incredibly welcoming and friendly. They had tea and a cookie... More

The narrow backstreet of Kyoto... stepping off the street into what looks like your nanna's front room... slightly overbearing obaa-san sorting out your room (well, maybe not "slightly")... cries of "Okaeri!" ("welcome back") when you come back after a five-minute trip to the bakery... Shimaya is a great, simple, comfortable and welcoming inn. It does feel very much like staying... More

Run by a very friendly couple who speak little English but make up for it with smiles and warmth. In return for paying cash they throw in breakfast for free. Decor was a bit dated and facilities basic (shared bathroom and toilets) but its clean and friendly and has downtown Kyoto on its doorstep whilst being in a quiet neighbourhood.... More

We chose this place after reading Mel's review and it was awesome. The location is great - very central and convenient to access all tourist spots (in fact, very near the Nishiki Food Market) but still on a little quiet, traditional street. We stayed for 4 nights and were given a huge room (at least 8 tatami for the 2... More

A real treasure! Located in a small alley off the main downtown street of Kyoto. Thus, despite only a few minutes walk to the hustle and bustle of the city cnter it is very quiet. Very cosy and homely. All the downstairs rooms face a Japanese garden. Being a small ryokan it has only 1 common bathroom. But that is... More

Exactly what I was looking for in a bare-bones ryokan stay in Kyoto. Our room was huge and the friendly couple that run the place couldn't have been nicer. Very clean, perfect location for seeing the city, tea service every night. Would recommend it to anyone.
