The guy who was running the place during our stay was hopeless even by English standards, let alone Japanese. He was late opening up, so we called the phone number on the scribbled sign, and he still took ages to appear from wherever he had clearly been napping. We then had an argument - seriously! - about how many nights... More

The location of BakPak is great! The bed's are ok. The kitchen could be much cleaner. The staff is never there...

We stayed here after a miserable experience in Tokyo, so our opinion may be colored a bit by comparison, but the rooms were clean, the staff was polite a helpful, the location was perfect (just steps to Gion), and the other travelers we met while staying there were awesome, and helped us plan our Thailand trip. I suppose the one... More

We stayed here for our Kyoto Trip last Apr 2010 during the Sakura Season. Here's a quick Pros and Cons of this Hostel. Pros: 1. GREAT LOCATION. Buses and subway are just a few minutes walk. 2. Staff personnel speaks perfect English, they're also very helpful 3. Friendly Environment. So easy to make friends here. Cons: 1. The Janet Jackson... More

This was my first time staying in this type of accommodation. And this, is by far one of the best place I've stayed(right up there in the lines of 5 star hotels I've stayed). Now don't get me wrong, I'm 17 and I don't usually stay at 5 star hotels but there are things that helps this small hostel beats... More

I know that some folks love this place and others hate it. Well, I tried to like it and after going to another hostel close by for less money, I'd not return here. The staff was rude, they also changed my reservations at the last minute from a room I wanted to something else. Also, our room (which was 8... More

I booked online two weeks in advance - paid a deposit via credit card (in euros, weirdly) and got a confirmation e-mail. Five days before we were due to arrive in Kyoto, we received an e-mail saying our reservation had been canceled due to computer problems. As for the deposit money - after telling us to come by and pick... More

While not the cleanest or most comfortable place my travel group stayed with on this trip, the bakpak hostel was a good deal for our money. It must be kept in mind that the BakPak is a hostel and not a hotel and is therefore much more tightly budgeted, allowing for less luxury. Though we had originally booked at the... More

Our private twin room looked like a prison cell. There was no window so no natural light at all, the walls were dull grey and the "wardrobe" was a narrow metal locker - just like the sort you might expect in an office or a rough secondary school. There was no toilet on our floor so you had to go... More

This was a great hostel!! A short walk to the heart of Kyoto. Very clean common area with DVD player and TV. Great kitchen and very clean toilets and bathrooms. The rooms (4 bed dorms) were comfortable and warm. The best part of the hostel was the in-room PC. Not available in all rooms. Free in-room internet access is unheard... More
