I visited this place for 3 nights during my trip in Kyoto in April 2015. For me, I was like 13-15 mins walk from Kyoto St. The address that was given on their website or on TA was not a place to check in. The alley was so tiny and dark. So,I did have a difficult time to find the... More

Stayed here with a few friends in a standard room, whereby you lay your own futon etc out on the floor. Location was good, if a little tucked away (key collection was from a hidden away reception/bar around the corner), but within easy walking distance from Kyoto's main train station. A few friendly family noodle joints within close vicinity, and... More

We were here in June 2015 with two small children 3 and 5. We were able to get one of the two rooms on the main floor, which was nice for our youngest to avoid the steep stairs. There is a decent kitchen well equipt on the main floor but it gets a bit crowded where there are a few... More

Pros (+): - Location (10 min walk from Kyoto station) - In a quiet pedestrian street - Close to bus/subway/train station - Close to restaurant/convenience shops - Clean Cons (-): - Tiny room - No futon but 2 thin mattresses on top of each other (not comfortable) - Noisy place because of the very thin "walls" (you can literally hear... This accommodation was fine if you just need a tiny room to sleep in. It was clean and sufficient. However, I did not feel like I had a Ryokan experience that many people speak of in Japan, and that was disappointing. In addition, the rooms are REALLY small and at times it stressed me out.

3 of us stayed here in Oct 2014. It's high-season in Kyoto or something along this line. Either triple sharing rooms were sold out or overpriced. I ended up enquiring their sister property, however due to a shortage of room, the staff recommended Ikoi no ie. Room reservation was a breeze. Staff who emailed was helpful. We were told the... We stayed at Ikoinoie for four nights. 31 Oct-3 Nov 2014. The room is simple japanese style for our family of four people. We enjoyed the japanese gowns that were prepared for us. We had some nice pictures wearing them. There are japanesse restaurants near by and udong was nice. For the guest house staff, they are very pretty in... More

This guest house has a good location, just about 10 min away (by walk) from the station. We stayed here for 2 nights. Some comments said it's noisy, but actually we felt it's so quiet at night. Location is good: restaurants, shops and even Japanese bathhouse... etc. The only thing that I want to remind travelers is: Please double check... More

The Hostel is a bit hard to find as there is no big clear sign indicating that this is the place. However, you manage to find as the street it is on is very small. The staff is very helpful and nice. Location is perfect. Maybe 5-10 minutes walk from the metro.Very traditional place. Traditional showers and traditional bedding. Very... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
