Wonderful high class and friendly Ryokan in fabulous Arashiyama. Fantastic Kaiseki food, lovely baths and comfortable traditional tatami mat rooms with excellent air conditioning. This is a great place to stay as everything (bamboo forest, monkey park, cormorant fishing) is within easy walking distance.

Staying at Arashiyama Benkei was the highlight of my 3 week Japanese trip. The ryokan is located not in the city centre of Kyoto but at a picturesque riverside town which is a 15 minute train ride away from Kyoto station. The staff were exceptional and customer service over exceeded all my expectations. My husband and I are vegetarians (e.g.... More

This was hands down the best stay and experience of our trip through Japan through 4, 5 star properties and some airbnbs. The inroom check in is seamless and had that special wow factor when the girl brought up a little question I popped at the time of booking months ago regarding traditional sweets in the local area. She reminded... More

As this was our second stay at a Ryokan we inevitably had to compare the two. The hotel has a compulsory checkout at 10 am after which they charge yen 5000 per hour. On the other hand the checkin time is 4 pm. The room is extremely minimalistic with all seating on the floor and two small chairs next to... More

They have nice Tatami-room and some of their rooms have own Rotenburo (outside bath) in the room. Only 2 minute to Arashiyama, so it's wonderful location also. Food was good and their service were very kind and helpful. Strongly recommend if you are looking Ryokan in Kyoto.

Stayed at this Ryokan for a nite and I have to admit, their rooms are huge. As the hotel is rather large by Ryokan standards, you will be ushered into other rooms for dinner and breakfast. I had the luxury of ryokan hopping for 2 nites, staying at Hanaikada across the river then crossing the bridge and staying at Benkei.... More

Incredible service, unbelievable food and an authentic Japanese experience. The location was very quiet at night and relaxing. I thoroughly enjoyed the outdoor onsen, which helped ease sore muscles from walking all day. I recommend this to anyone!

We stayed for 2 nights in January 2015. The hotel was very accommodating for our family of four (2A, 12yo, 10yo). We had a room that included our own onsen, which was the first time my wife and I could soak together in an onsen (as men and women are separated in public baths). The room was lovely and had... Staying in Western Kyoto

Neighborhood Profile
Western Kyoto
Western Kyoto is home to some of the city's best eccentricities. Kyoto's Saga-Toriimoto Preserved Street takes visitors back in time to the Meiji Period, where old homes have been transformed into tea houses and eateries. Pleasure boats drift down the riverbank, under wooden bridges that beckon nature lovers to hiking trails and botanical walks. The area's famously tall bamboo groves, monkey park, and impressive vistas during the Hanami cherry blossom viewing season mean that it is busiest in warmer months, though also gorgeous in the fall, when the mountains and hills along the banks turn multi-colored. Historic and engaging, even the rail cars in Western Kyoto seek to exemplify its traditional nature and scenic beauty. Many people, including natives, come to visit the 1,200 rakan statues at the Otagi Nenbutsuji Temple, which is still in use as a religious site.
