We had a great time in the quaint 100+ year old home. Our family of 6 stayed here for 2 days: my husband and I had a double room that was traditionally Japanese and my kids had a bunk room all to themselves with curtains and own lights around each bed for added privacy. It was the perfect set up... More

This is my first time going solo, and i was quite nervous meeting with strangers. But after awhile i felt comfortable. But Mama, Papa, and Coco are so nice and welcoming, it felt like a one big family when i stayed. Also my roomate is very kind and talkative. I wouldn't mind visiting again sometimes... :)

This is a very welcoming place, after travelling for a couple of days we were relieved to arrive at Compass, were given a cup of tea and time to unwind. Mama and Papa are the owners who take very good care of everyone, as well as Coco who is so lovely. Compass is very clean, has all the amenities and... More

No wonder why Compass has so many great reviews. It is a lovely, charming spot in one of the best Japanese cities - Kyoto. The owners take care of every detail, the place is clean and friendly (we met people from many different countries), one can feel like home there. Despite rather modest conditions, there is nothing missing there, plus... More

Our trip to Japan was one we had dreaming about forever, and decided to try and go for the famous cherry blossom season. The only stumbling block in terms of accommodation was Kyoto. Everywhere was booked. Everywhere. It seems at cherry blossom season the place to be in Japan is Kyoto, so every hotel in Kyoto was fully booked for... More

We have visited the hostel in April 2014 for 2 nights. Mama is an amazing host and the facilities of the hostel were great. It is located in a very Japanese neighborhood, close to the bus network so it is very accessible. The breakfast was tasty and the we've slept comfortably. Domo arigato Mama!!

    Staying in Shimogyo-ku

    Neighborhood Profile
    Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
