We enjoyed our stay here and would be happy to recommend it to friends, it was in a convenient location, and we were able to walk to many main attractions. It's also close to a train station which made it easy to get around. The room was very clean and a comfortable size for 2 people. The staff were friendly... More

The staff are very willing to help and always have a smile on their face. The hotel lobby/corridor and from the outside is stunning. The rooms itself are alright and comfortable but not as flashy as the rest of the hotel. The breakfast really isn't worth the money so try and skip that option when booking (you can always buy... This hotel is in a good location in Kyoto and within walking distance of many great areas. The room was big but there was a problem with odor in the bathroom, so they upgraded us to a room that had double king beds, pushed together, so for 2 people it could have slept like 4-6! the library for cocktails or... We stayed here just a few weeks ago for 3 nights between 24th and 26th of December 2015. The staff were very helpful however the hotel lacked many basic amenities. We had two rooms booked, in one room we received a kettle the other one a rice cooker. When we asked the hotel staff for another kettle as we don't... More

Stayed 4 nights here. Hotel was very conveniently located near Karasuma Oike metro station, and within walking distance to many sites within the city. There are plenty of 7-11 / Lawsons / Family Marts around and even a 24-hr supermarket on the next block. Although Kawaramachi or Shijo are nearer the shops and sites, they are also a lot busier,... This was the first hotel i stayed in on a first visit to Japan so nothing else to compare it to. I found it very well located, helpful at the desk and good service. Breakfast was served in very spacious surroundings and was always fresh with lots of choice (trad Japanese, western and lots of great salads). The room was... More

The hotel is centrally located and easy to get to from Kyoto Station (just take one line for a couple of stops). Starbucks right across the street and 1 block down the street on the same side. Walking distance to the main strip where there are good restaurants, shops, bars etc. Easy to get to the main sites by taking... More

Just next door to the metro this place was perfect for us to hop around. And we don't mind walking to explore an area and found walking down to Gion district quite manageable. Probably not if you don't like walking! The room was comfortable and clean, slightly odd decor. Staff were very helpful.

My partner and I were lucky enough to get a room at this hotel for half price. the room was slightly smaller than the average Australian hotel but this is japan so it was actually larger than many other hotels I've stayed at in the country. There was no view from our room but there was good sunlight. the room... More

Despite an impressive facade The Monterey Kyoto lacks the two most important things that can make a hotel successful. The ‘personal’ and ‘material’ elements are somehow lost in this extravagant Scotland tries-to-meet Japan. We were greeted by our receptionist who told us that we were too early and to come back later; as we returned the hotel lobby was heaving... More

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
