My wife and I just returned from our first ever trip to Japan. While we did see, do, and stay, at amazing places, my fave was Kyoto and the Tamahan. Kyoto is an ancient city with small winding streets in the old section. The Tamahan is tucked away along one of those winding streets. In Japan the traditional Inn is... More

This traditional Japanese inn ('ryokan') is in the Gion, the old part of Kyoto. It is a fabulous place- the building is how it looks on the pictures, with a calm atmosphere and staff that couldn't be kinder or more helpful. The traditional breakfasts were delicious and very filling. The Tamahan is very well placed for wandering around the local... More

Weeks before my business trip to Tokyo, I was still endlessly deliberating between multiple hotels for my weekend trip to Kyoto. I knew I wanted an authentic experience, but what about amenities, location, staff, etc? There are just so many options in the area, and even after hours of research I couldn't narrow it down to just one. Finally, thanks... More

This was such a great find on Tripadvisor. A really great location, great authentic Japanese feel and the wonderful staff could not have been more helpful. Simple Japanese style but still felt luxurious. A great spot for exploring Kyoto

Fabulous place. We stayed in a garden room and so lovely. Very authentic. Staff are great and when we arrived we were offered tea. We went out for the afternoon and when we came back our bed was up and tea waiting. Close to everything in the gion area. Would recommend this place.

This 10-room ryokan was the perfect little Kyoto inn for our cherry blossom Hanami We visited in early April 2014. After the hustle-bustle of big city Tokyo, Tamahan was a great contrast in quiet comfort. We stayed for 3 nights. The inn location was perfect -- walking distance to Gion and Higashyama districts, the main sightseeing areas in Kyoto. Our... More

A little luxurious ryokan in the centre of Gion - within walking distance to local attractions yet hidden away in its own sanctuary. We only stayed for one night but wish we could have stayed for longer. We had a degustation dinner that was beautifully prepared and tasted delicious. Our host was amazing - so helpful and nice. Definitely recommend... More

Perfectly located ryokan in old quarter near Kodai-ji and Yasaka Shrine. Traditional Japanese rooms of good size and quality. Very friendly staff helpful with first-time stay in ryokan. Varied and fine food served in room - both dinner and breakfast. Would recommend to anyone going to Kyoto. Traveled May, 2009.

This was my first experience at a ryokan and I would definitely go back. To me it was the experience of ultimate lux. The room was sizeable, spotless, and opened up to a little garden. I kept the doors open until it was dark to have the fresh air come in and did not feel disturbed by neighbors across the... More

Assuming you have researched the whole Ryokan experience before you book one, and you like the idea of living on the floor with very little furniture at conventional height, and you are content with minimal western niceties, then keep reading. We visited cherry blossom season in Kyoto in April 2013 and stayed at the Tamahan for 5 nights in one... More
