This ryokan was rated as one of the top in Kyoto so it was on top of our list and price was not an issue for us. The location is fantastic, on a quiet street in the middle of historical area of Kyoto. It is small and feels very private. Rooms are generous size and we had a room opening... More

We stayed at Tamahan for two nights. Like all ryokans in Kyoto it is not cheap but is worth the splurge for the experience for a night or two. In addition we found this ryokan very reasonably priced compared to many of the other options in Kyoto. The inn has a great location in the hills on the eastern side... More

Tamahan was the first ryokan we stayed at during our two week trip to Japan in April. I knew the price was 25,000 yen (per person), close to $500 US. If you did not have the kaiseki dinner, the price was closer to $375 US, so that's what I reserved. I changed my mind as we have a friend in... More

We stayed at this ryokan for one night on our fantastic trip to Kyoto and Tokyo. The ryokan is in a beautiful old neighbourhood of Kyoto, so 5/5 for location! The welcome is all Japan-style: warm and with a cup of tea. However, the room and facilities are extremely simple and old fashioned (and not the charming kind of old... More

This is an interesting Ryokan in Kyoto. Situated in a small and narrow lane it is an eclectic arrangement of rooms, sparsely furnished with no beds. But it is Japan. Tall people beware as a taller mamber of our four was almost scalped walking down the hall way. Our room was a single space with a low table and some cushions.... More

We loved staying at Tamahan. The meals all exceeded our expectations. We were unsure whether or not we would be able to sleep on the traditional futons on the floor. However, they were a bit like sleeping in a cocoon--very comfortable. Staff was welcoming and helpful. We highly recommend Tamahan.

My husband and I stayed here for 4 days in Jan. 2015 and had a wonderful experience. The staff are so gracious and helpful and the rooms are really cool. Just be prepared - this is a traditional ryokan, which means you spend a lot of time on the floor. It's fine if you manage your expectations, but this is... More

My wife and I just returned from our first ever trip to Japan. While we did see, do, and stay, at amazing places, my fave was Kyoto and the Tamahan. Kyoto is an ancient city with small winding streets in the old section. The Tamahan is tucked away along one of those winding streets. In Japan the traditional Inn is... More

This traditional Japanese inn ('ryokan') is in the Gion, the old part of Kyoto. It is a fabulous place- the building is how it looks on the pictures, with a calm atmosphere and staff that couldn't be kinder or more helpful. The traditional breakfasts were delicious and very filling. The Tamahan is very well placed for wandering around the local... More

Weeks before my business trip to Tokyo, I was still endlessly deliberating between multiple hotels for my weekend trip to Kyoto. I knew I wanted an authentic experience, but what about amenities, location, staff, etc? There are just so many options in the area, and even after hours of research I couldn't narrow it down to just one. Finally, thanks... More
