Fabulous location in Kyoto: very atmospheric. Even though I was travelling solo, my room was huge ! Breakfast and service overall were excellent with lots of small attentions: tea when I arrived, etc.

Pros: yes, it is in a fabulous atmospheric location in Gion. Yes, our room was the size of a suite with dining room, sleeping quarters and separate bathroom and shower/bath. And a view of the garden below ( we were upstairs at the back). Minuses: for such a high end ryokan, attention to "period" detail was lacking e.g. the dining... More

I saw negative reviews on this ryokan on Tripadvisor, but I had no regrets that I eventually chose it!! A group of 6 adults and 2 kids (2.5 yr and 4.5 yr) stayed there for 4 nights. We were provided a 2 bedroom + 1 dinning room + 2 bathroom/toilet linked by a Japanese corridor with garden view and with... More

Tamahan is well located in the beautiful, old section of Kyoto within walking distance to historic sites, shops and restaurants. Our room was large, lovely and opened to a beautiful garden view. Bedding was comfortable. Breakfast, both Japanese and western, was adequate -- nothing more -- and indifferently served. Appreciated modern touches were an en suite bathroom and a locking... More

On our recent trip to Japan, my fiance and I really wanted to experience a ryokan. This was one of the most difficult things to find at a reasonable price but after a lot of hunting, I decided on this one. While expensive, it was actually fairly reasonable compared to many others I looked at so I felt like the... More

VERY expensive for what it was... the location was great and it seemed very authentic etc. But the food was so-so, and the room and bathroom was nothing special. Also, there was no explanation for the food in English - either written or oral - so we had to guess much of what we were eating. It was a fine... More

We just left today after 2 amazing nights at the Tamahan. I was a bit concerned since some of the past reviews were disappointing. I couldn't disagree more with them. The rooms were amazing. The beds super comfortable and the service level without compare. We just took the breakfast option. The Japanese breakfast was like a 5 star restaurant and... More

We received a warm welcome on arrival and quickly showed to our upstairs room for a hot towel, a reviving cup of tea and Japanese sweets. Our room looked out over rooftops, an interesting garden and alleyway. It was very quiet and although we knew the ryokan was almost full the weekend we were there, we did not encounter any... More

I stayed at Tamahan Ryokan for three nights with my mother. It costed us 1280USD/820GBP. I have stayed in a Japanese Ryokan in Kyoto before and enjoyed it very much, so I brought my mother for a ryokan experience. The facility of Tamahan was good. Everything was clean and we had our own toilet+bathroom. But there were some annoying details... More

We were really looking forward to a genuine Ryokan experience but we're hugely disappointed with the Tamahan Ryokan. Our stay for two nights was 1000 USD / 650 GBP and for the money we got very little. A traditional Ryokan is supposed to be all about impeccable service of which we received none. The staff were unhelpful and very un... More
