We stayed at Yoshikawa for our first night in Kyoto. It is in a stylish part of the city, about 10 minutes from Nishiki Market. We felt very well taken care of, the hospitality is one reason to stay at a traditional Japanese inn. We were showed up to our room after a welcoming cup of tea in the lobby. There were traditional Japanese sweets waiting and we were shown around the room. It was huge and very traditionally appointed. We had windows overlooking a small courtyard and another overlooking some rooftops. Very romantic. We had dinner at the Tempra restaurant next door which was excellent and felt very formal. The next morning we were shown to a large dining room overlooking the most gorgeous garden we've ever seen. We were the only ones in the room. The food was exquisite and delicious and plentiful. The room matron took our photos in our yukatas. The whole experience surpassed our expectations and we would stay again. We communicated with the owner before coming about dietary restrictions and they were very helpful and able to meet our needs. Wonderful ryokan.

It's hard to put to words what a beautiful experience our stay was. If you are hesitating or any reason I say JUST GO! You will be in such good hands. Food is out of this world. The cappuccinos they brought to our room after dinner were the best we had in Japan. The wooden tubs are such a treat! I was in there twice a day. The room does taking a bit of getting used to. No shoes in the Ryokan at all, slippers through out the common space, but not in the room. Kimonos for breakfast. Curfew between 10:30p - 12a. You are transported back in time so go in with ease and open mindedness. It's quite the journey. I've never been emotional over a place that I've stayed at before, until Yoshikawa.

My family of four stayed here in April this year and had an amazing experience. Everyone was so friendly and the food was outstanding. We all still talk about the amazing breakfasts each morning! Location is great - easy to walk to the Nishi market and subway access is also easy. It is pricey but for a ryokan that is to be expected. Would not hesitate coming back!

We were told this is Paul McCartney’s favorite restaurant in Kyoto. Couldn’t say it if it isn’t true. Regardless, it is fabulous. Cooked right in front of you. Veggies. Seafood. Wonderful. Dessert served in the adjoining ryokan. Very cool.

Small traditional inn right in the middle of Kyoto two blocks from city hall. The staff is very attentive and greet you whenever you arrive and say goodby whenever you leave. Their English is limited but they are so friendly and solicitous that it doesn’t make a difference. The Japanese breakfast, which changes daily, although it is a variation of the same themes, was the bestI have ever had. The tempura restaurant that is part of the inn is very good.

Enjoyed set lunch of almost ¥3k after Gion Matsuri parade. Very fresh veggies and shrimp snd fish was likewise tender. Traditional ryokan with good restaurant known for its tempura served by a tempura master. If you could not get reservations just show up early for counter table seating.

VERY traditional (which is very fun!!) Best Japanese service. The women who work here are so incredibly sweet and attentive. My sister and I did the maiko experience and, let me tell you, they were extremely excited for us. When we got back they wanted to see pictures. A couple had also gotten engaged during our stay here and they had a blast having a photo shoot for them. Whenever we’d finish our plates, they’d get so excited and thank us. (Before we left for our trip we did some research and found out it is rude to not finish a meal) You will not meet sweeter people. They are very engaged with their visitors. The food is delicious (but be prepared for the biggest breakfast of your life). I’ve never eaten so much because it was good...and also because I didn’t want to seem rude. Haha. The atmosphere is traditional and aesthetically pleasing. Also, rumor on the street is that Leonardo DiCaprio stayed here and if you ask, they’ll show you a book of pictures of all the celebrities who have stayed there. I 10/10 would return and recommend this hotel. According to our guide, this place is renown and I fully get why!! Go! Worth the cost!

One never knows if one's memories are reliable but today I revisited Yoshikawa and was not disappointed. Wonderful setting of only about 10 chairs at a counter with the master chef cooking and serving each piece of Tempura individually at a nice pace. The tempura was excellent as was the service. At ¥3000 +drinks Yoshikawa offers a great experience that I can highly recommend.

The Yoshikawa is a rayokan. It cannot be compared to regular luxury hotels. If you want to experience the subtileness of Japanese culture, if you intend to be driven into the fascinating world of an ancient time and if you do not mind the intimacy of a small place, then the Yoshikawa is your place to go. My wife and I spent two nights in the Yoshikawa Inn. From the very first moment to the last, we very much enjoyed the warm hospitality and friendliness of our hosts. The service was very discrete and perfect. All positive clichés Westerners may are looking for in booking a rayon were fully matched. The atmosphere of the Yoshikawa is calm and refined. The rayokan has a little patina which adds to its originality. Hence, you feel to be part of a living place that is not streamlined to the cold perfection of normal high-end hotels. We had a lovely view onto the surprisingly large original Japanese garden - with real Koi (room no. 10)! The room was spacious for two people. Little details: TV-set etc. can be hidden out of sight in the cupboard, luggage being left in the small entry room. The CD player offers classical Japanese music, the incense rods are regularly refilled, the provided yukatas a must for dinning - the perfect set-up to feel past Japan. The kaiseki was sublime, not only the Inn's famous tempura part; the Japanese breakfast was very rich and excellent in taste - all meals being served in different rooms. Sadly leaving the Yoshikawa, we decided that we will not try out other top rayokan of the Gion area at our next Kyoto stay. The wonderful experience provided by the Yoshikawa simply merits loyalty.

The people who run this ryokan are very nice and the food was wonderful. I hate writing this review as everyone was extremely nice, polite, kind, and wonderful. Spending $900 USD per night for a small, attic room with a tiny bathroom, and a small window does not seem appropriate. I LOVE experiencing a local vibe and giving my money to local people but I was extremely shocked to pay $900 for such a small room. I have traveled all over the world and this is a place that I will always remember as definitely not a good value, and way overpriced. I am only writing this review as I wish someone else did so I could have read it. I have absolutely no problem paying $900/night but it needs to be worth it; at least a little. I do recommend this ryokan but please know what you are getting yourself into. We left and went to a chain hotel and paid a bit more per night but it was a lovely experience.
