I can't recommend this place highly enough. Staff were very welcoming from the moment we arrived. Iced tea on arrival, short activities on the evening, and small gestures every day. The public bath was also a nice treat after a long day in the humidity. Very close to the train station and very easy to find. Don't hesitate in booking... More

it's a lovely small room in a lovely small house but the ofuro's terrific. The ryokan is full of warmth and laughter. During winter, it gets super cold washing my face at the basin in the room. There is a closet full of yukatas and kimonos for guests to try on.

We havent visited Japan before, but wanted to get a feel for 'traditional' Japanese culture. While we can't comment on how authentic Ryokan Shimizu is, it certainly felt like it was. Such a contrast to a big chain hotel, this place is tucked away in a quiet suburban street just a few minutes walk from Kyoto station. The host family... More

For something like US$120 a night for two people this is a great bargain. Traditional feel and warm, attentive hosts - they'll go out of their way to help even though their English is limited. The rooms are traditional and sparse but very comfortable. There's a common room down stairs, bikes for rent, an onsen and it's close to Kyoto... More

I've always been a fan of ryokan ever since my first visit to Japan, and Shimizu is a great example. Location is very convenient, and the staff very friendly. The private bath was great for winding down after a day of shrines and temples. Only thing I would say is that if you have any mobility issues (I have an... More

A small ryokan tucked away on a narrow side street near Kyoto Station. Shimizu is quite plain, but lovely in so many ways. Rooms are traditional Japanese style, we stayed in a room called Nagano, which had a private toilet and shower. We felt comfortable, very warmly welcomed and safe. It was like coming home! Our hosts were courteous and... More

We (me and my girlfriend)stayed here for one night but we wish that we could have stayed longer! As soon as we arrived we got the warmest welcome we've ever encountered. Satoshi, the owner of the hotel, always happy and cheerful, even provided us with some homemade drinks and made us feel at home. The staff was superfriendly and helpful... More

We were anxious and excited as we headed for Kyoto on the 3rd part of our vacation in Japan. We stayed in regular hotels prior to this and we wanted to experience a Japanese Ryokan. We were a family of five and we booked two rooms. Although we arrived in Ryokan Shimizu before the check in time, we were accomodated... More

Ryoken Shimizu is located a shirt 5 minute walk from Kyoto Station on the Kyoto tower side. We arrived a little early but were escorted to our upstairs room. The room was excellent and just what we hoped and very traditional with the modern twist of an on suite bathroom and shower. We stayed for 5 nights and our hosts... More

Possibly the best sleep we had in our whole two week trip to Japan. Three of us in a large room with ensuite facilities, all very clean and comfortable. Also very quiet in terms of noise from other guests, especially compared to other Ryokans we stayed in. Staff were very friendly, welcoming, helpful and also accommodating with leaving bags. We...
