This is my second time staying in Ryokan Shimizu. Still remember the place, no need for a map. LOL. I first stayed there in 2013, occupying first floor room, for three people. This time, I got a room on the 2nd floor, for two people. Room is spacious compared to Tokyo's hotels, clean and comfortable. AC works both ways, for... More

I recently stayed at Ryokan Shimizu with my 11 year old son. This was our first trip to Japan and our first stay in a Ryokan. Both my son and I enjoyed it tremendously. I wouldn't hesitate to stay at a Ryokan again. The rooms are very nice and the staff/family was extremely helpful and friendly. Some of the nice... More

Very warm (literally) and welcoming ryokan with very attentive hosts who went out of their way to look after us during a cold February stay in Kyoto: hot tea when we returned from a chilly day of touring; chilled water when we overheated in the Japanese bath; umbrellas when it was raining. Our room was clean and comfortable and had... More

Great little ryokan close to Kyoto Station. Clean and comfortable and close to transport and some very good places to eat. The hosts were very polite and helpful. Offered good advise for getting around and seeing the sights of Kyoto and made sure the bath was ready for us in the evening. Very nice indeed. The walls are thin so... More

Superb, authentic in every way. Book in advance, don't sell yourself short on days in Kyoto, there is a lot to see and take in. The sleeping arrangements are interesting. Whilst not what you might expect given the price per person per night, it's one of those things that needs to be done whilst in Japan.

We stayed here for a few nights. I love it so much that I will definitely go back again in 2015. The location is within walking distance to Kyoto station and it is located on a small quite alley. The host was helpful. The japanese style breakfast was nice too. The ryokan is small however the room is a good size.... More

The ryokan is a short walk from Kyoto Station down a quiet street. We stayed for a total of 7 nights and therefore found the rooms very comfortable. There are a number of food options close by particularly at Kyoto Station so there was never a shortage of food choices. The family that run the ryokan are just lovely and... More

The Ryokan is nice, rooms are comfortable and clean. The staff is also very nice and helpful. I just didn´t like the "onsen" the water was really dirty, and as it was the first time for me in an onsen i thought it was normal, but it was not. Onsens normally have crystalline-clear water. On the other hand there is... More

My friend and I wanted to experience a Ryokan so we stayed here for one night. Service was great, free Wifi but bit sad that the traditional breakfast wasn't available for one night stays. Loved that they supplied kimono robes for us to wear and it was very traditional experience! Worth the stay!!

My boyfriend and I just returned from Japan. Thinking back to all the places we've stayed (airbnb, hotels, ryokans), Ryokan Shimizu is definitely number ONE! I'm really thankful to have done some research on Tripadvisor and trusted the reviews. Even though we were only able to book just one night at Ryokan Shimizu (at end of Nov 2014), the experience...
