We found this Ryokan to be of terrific value. The location is great as it's so close to the train/bus station and to the central part of Kyoto, we walked everywhere. The place was super clean, the rooms were nice with tatami mats, futons, air con/heaters, private bathrooms, tea service, and space for storing bags. The family is kind and... More

Lovely little Ryokan located conveniently close to Kyoto Station and all amenities. The rooms were comfortable & clean, and was fun to experience the 'true' Japan. The staff were the friendliest people we came across in Japan - absolutely amazing, and couldn't do enough to make our stay memorable & fun. The staff really took the time to ensure we... More

This place is pretty basic, no frills, but I was very pleased with my stay at a very affordable price point. They don't do any breakfast or Kaiseki dinner or anything, but I'd rather go out to explore the restaurant scene anyway. The location is convenient in that its walkable from Kyoto station. I would definitely stay here again.

Staff is very hospitable. Rooms are comfortable. Location is practical: short walk from the Kyoto station and very close to two major temples, which are probably on your to see list. A nice touch was a short calligraphy lesson.

We spent two nights here and think we got lucky in getting one of the rooms with a window overlooking the front of the ryokan and the street. We arrived earlier than the 4pm check in but staff (two who spoke good English) were more than happy to store our bags for us until later (and same upon check out).... More

The ryokan was wonderfully done up in the typical Japanese style - complete with tatami mats, futons, paper screen windows etc. The entrance hallway has a lot of little knick knacks, statuettes, postcards and a plethora of other artefacts that really give it a quaint feel. The best part was the service and that we could dress up in kimono's... More

1. Location wise is very close to Kyoto station and surrounding area near shopping area and restaurant. 2. Room size is spacious but the bathroom is small with little space for movement. 3. Surprising the traditional mattress very comfortable and can sleep well.. 4. Arrive early at the hotel where the hotel check in time policy is 3pm but staff... More

Such a lovely little place <10 mins from the Kyoto train station. We can get anywhere in under 10 mins walk or 20 mins by local train. The room is a gem with all the comfort of home. Comfortable and cozy sleeping mats. Amazing staff, so helpful and friendly. Highly recommended!! (The curfew is midnight, not for someone who wants... More

Positive: friendly staff - very interesting decoration of Japanese culture inside the hotel - cheap Negative: not very clean rooms - the mattress on the floor was smelly - they close the door at midnight and you cannot come back later

If you visit Japan don´t leave without staying in a traditional ryokan at least once. This could be a perfect choice, and what better place for doing it than Kyoto? In a quiet street near Kyoto train station nothing will disturb your rest. I spent here 2 nights and it was a fantastic experience. Clean and cozy, they offered two... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
