The ryokan has everything that you would need, but the best is the service of the nice japanese family. They make this a experience unforgettable. It´s situated really close of the Kyoto Station and you can find really good restaurants close. Enjoy!

This place is so adorable and clean, and the owner is extremely gracious and kind! We came here to have the "ryokan" experience, and it was lovely. Upon entering, they provide you with tea, a map and specific public transportation instructions on how to get to each popular destination. It is a very quick walk from Kyoto Station, which is... We arrived early and wanted to enjoy Kyoto so dropped off our bags and the owner who checked us in made some great recommendations about places to visit that day. The tatami room was great - had our own bath and shower room. The futons were super comfortable. The room seemed very new (except for the cathode ray TV that... More

The room is as described and were clean and cute. The owners were friendly and helpful in every aspect; showed us where and how to get to key sites of Kyoto, sometimes providing refreshments upon return. Located within walking distance of the Kyoto train station. Highly rate this accommodation

Loved it! Arrived early and found it easily from the station (Central exit toward post office). The owner asked me my plans for the day and when I told him where I was headed, he pulled out a map, pointed out spots and suggested a route etc. Then he recommended a few other places. Awesome! Then he recommended some evening... More

Ryokan Shimizu is a treasure. The accommodations are delightful, clean and comfortable. The staff goes well beyond the call of duty to serve their guests, with genuine hospitality and concern for the guests. The bath with floating fruit in it is a pleasure. And the entire building is smoke-free, another huge bonus. There are also a nearby coin laundry and... More

We have just spent 3 nights at Shimizu ryokan and we've enjoyed our stay a lot. Our room was big, clean, with its private bathroom and air conditioning. Bath and bedlinens were changed daily and everything was just perfect. It was nice going back there after long days of visit of the city. The owner and his family were helpful,... More

This ryokan exceeded all our expectations -- from onsen every night to free souvenir items before we leave -- that will help us remember Kyoto at her finest. The location - 5-minute walk to Kyoto Station - is amazing. The excellent services we received from the staff truly reflects what Japanese hospitality means! Will definitely go back here next time... This ryokan is really a good choice for first time ryokan traveller like us. Because the staff, the facility was give a good impression of japanese traditional accomodation. They also have modern western style bathroom and toilet. So we can taste japanese sleep with western facility. Enjoy!

Extremely welcoming Ryokan, very conveniently located not far from the Shinkansen train station. 10-15 minutes walk if I remember well. Great place to live a great Japanese cultural experience with futon beds, plastic casted bathrooms and tatamis :) Loved it. Walls are a bit thin so it's better if you have quiet next door guests.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
