Get this first: mostly, if I didn't like a place, I don't bother to comment. Times are hard enough and maybe they had a bad day. We've staid in ryokans before, always had a good experience. But this was absolutely not to be recommended. The place just was not clean and the toilet was terrible, with colored marks left on... More

Don't sell your soul to go to this place. Would give it a minus number, as soon as we arrived the reception was so cold as dusty was like entering a car boots sale dead stock garage. We went to another hotel across the street paid slightly more but worth the investment.

I found the this place very strange, although very well priced for the centre of Kyoto,it did not take me long to see why,the place is really nothing more than an old cramped and cluttered Kyoto hous up a back street that I was lucky to find as its not very well marked on street maps.i found to place to be... This hotel would be better described as rooms in the Japanese style: we booked to stay one night here, expecting it to be a ryokan, but in fact, there was no evening meal available, and when we asked about the bath, we were told firmly that it was preferred we would not use it - and if we wished to,... Booked here for 3 nights after coming to the end of 4 weeks of travelling. As it was recommended in Lonely Planet Japan I figured it would be a fail safe option... I appreciate that you get what you pay for and this place was under £30 a night- so I didn't expect much. The only thing I do expect... More

This is one of the most disappointing hotels I have ever stayed in . The Man who runs it is two faced jerk . He is unhelpful , rude - I doubt this forum allows the word I like to use to describe him ( rhymes with TANKER and HUNT) On arrival he was very courteous as i was accompanied... More

Horrible in most aspects, plain bad in some. The place smells like moldy pee, and not even Wi-fi is available. Nor is toilet paper. However, we didn't get bitten by any bugs and there were some hot water in the shower, that is a bonus.

Do not ever make reservations for this ryocan. You enter through a sort of garage full of junk, access to the rooms is by a steep staircase and rooms are dusty. Air conditioning is manipulated so that only works at idle. In the hallway leading to the only bathroom that allows the owner to use the urine smell is unbearable... More

Please be aware that this hotel was infested with bedbugs when we where there. I am now back home facing the consequences of 3 nights in the Ryokan Hinomoto. Hopefully the old lady will notice it and start cleaning the place thoroughly.

We recently visited this Ryokan and feel dissapointed. First of all the booking was horrible. (an old lady is managing the ryokan). We had no confirmation, ro reply and had to use our Japanese friend for help. Rooms are used, need renovation and it is rather the place for those who pay no attention to something more than a place... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
