The hotel is not bad, but... I was in a twin room, quite large for Japanese standards, but the bathroom was really, really small. Everything was clean, but the carpet on the floor was really filthy and this upset me all time. The bed were large but not really comfortable. Breakfast was average (mix of Japanese, Chinese and International food).... More

Right next to the subway exit and near Kyoto central area- this place was perfect for us tourists. The rooms are spacious (as far as Japanese rooms go that's for sure) and have your standard amenities. It was very clean in there and quiet. The reception staff were helpful and spoke chinese and english enough to understand most tourists passing... More

Location is great for tourist visit. Easy access from Kyoto station - 15 min walk or 5 min on the subway which has a stop almost outside the front door. The room showed signs of wear. Carpet badly stained and some of the walls were scuffed/marked. The bathroom is tiny but functional. Beds were comfortable and noise level good. Staff... More

I stayed here for 2 weeks in summer. This hotel was clean and in a super convenient location. Shopping malls and tourist attractions are around. The room was large and clean, the beds were comfortable and the bathroom was quite small but clean and adequate for need

Good hotel downtown with restaurant and buffet breakfast. Rooms are a little outdated but clean. Rooms quiet even for downtown. Many restaurants even McDonald close bye. Many local attractions suggest as Golden Temple and Shogun Castle.

While not the top of the market, it's a comfortable place to stay and its position is very central and the nearest train station is just about straight under the hotel (nearest access is via a lift at the end of an alley a couple of doors to the north).

Rather dated bedroom. Somewhat gloomy with poor light. Smelt of smoke. Bathroom very dated cracked sink and did not help. Also too small. Reception helpful and willing to sort out problems . Breakfast more than adequate. But a bit overcrowded for number eating.

Karasuma Kyoto Hotel is shabby and dated. It has very old carpets (20 or 30 years old) with numerous stains and I wonder why the carpets have not been replaced. Also, the room has dated furniture, old sofa and cheap mattress. Overall, it is like a cheap motel. The bathroom is also old and dated. Cleaning cannot salvage these rooms... More

The location of this hotel is very convenient to shopping, transportation, restaurants and some sites. Also, several Family Marts and 7-11 stores within a couple blocks. Rooms are larger than many in Japan. Rooms are in need on an upgrade though - stains on the carpets and walls. Also, no in room safe so need to carry more than I... More

We had prepaid reservations and arrived eager to get started on our two day trip to Kyoto. We were dismayed to be greeted with the welcoming (sarcasm intended), "we are overbooked and we will move you to another hotel." The other hotel was to be a taxi away and not in the center. We patently refused. Angrily. What good is... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
