The hotel personnel were very friendly. They were all accommodating and nice. They spoke little English so we had to pin point things and acted to be able to communicate properly. The room was good, it has separate small spaces/rooms for bathing and using toilet. They have a common bathroom too which you can use if you want to experience... More

We accidentally made a mistake and reserved our room for the week before our trip. We didn't even realize the mistake until we had gotten to the hotel. The hotel staff were very understanding, and not only did they let us book a room last minute, they even let us use some of the money from our previous reservation toward... More

This hotel is typical for school trips, low budget ryokan/hotel. Location is wonderful. The building is old but they did the great job on cleaning. My room didn't have a bath/shower (there was a toilet in the room) and I had to use the shared baths, which is common in Japanese ryokan, but there were two of them and both... More

We only stayed in this hotel for one night. The night of the Gion Matsuri (festival)which happened right outside our hotel which was exciting! We wanted to stay in at least one traditional style japanese Ryokan style hotel, which is what we got with a bit of a twist as the corridors and foyer all look very modern day but... More

We stayed here for 4 nights from Apr 6-9. The hotel is right by Shiyakushomae Station, about a 5 min walk to Teramachi and Shin Kyogoku Shopping Arcades which connects to Nishiki Market and about a 10 min walk to Gion District and from Gion, just a short walk to Yasaka Shrine. The hotel is a bit dated but overall... More

The hotel is right outside a subway station. Except that most of the temple sights are not accessible by subway. The hotel does have a convenient store round the corner and a very popular udon shop just next to the main door. Being a local type hotel, there is a shared common bath. No shower facilities in the room. Only... More

A strange mix between a hotel and a traditional Ryokan. The rooms were okay, but showing signs of age and wear. The room had an en-suite toilet, tatami mat sleeping area and a sink area. Showers are of the traditional Japanese communal type on the ground floor. Beware the limited opening times in the morning and evening. The futon was... More

My boyfriend and I had such a lovely one night stay in April 2013 that we decided to return for another night when we passed back through Kyoto a week later! The rooms are very well equipped and comfortable and the view and location is fantastic. Communal bath and shower facilities very clean. Staff were always very happy and able... More

Maybe a little pricey because it was Sakura season. But location is great - right opposite Kyoto City Hall, 30min walk to Nijo temple, 50min to Silver Pavillion, a stone throw away from Gion and Pontocho street of great restaurants Point to not : communal baths, no bathroom in the room - live it like a Japanese !! Great breakfast

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
