So this was our budget hotel on our honeymoon. We walked in thinking that it was going to be like a Motel 6. Surprisingly it was a really nice experience. It was definietly more like a chain hotel. The room and bathroom were small; the bed was a bit uncomfortable, but honestly was still nicer than most US hotel chains.... More

Located very near the busy intersection in front of Keifuku Shijo-Omiya Station, the hotel is easy to miss. There are many roads branching off from this intersection and following the right road near the Police Station is the key. It is adjacent to another hotel Kyoto Village and in front of Ark Hotel. The facade of the hotel is narrow... More

As usual, Toyoko Inn offers clean no-frills but with all basic necessities accomodation. While not as near the tourist belt as its Shijio Karasuma, it has a good supermarket across the road. We stayed in the business twin which offers better privacy if you are sharing with a friend

We spent 3 nights here. It is at a good location and the front desk staff are very helpful. Nothing really to write home about. The best thing is that it is just across the street from the Keifuku Electric Railroad station, making it very easy to visit Arashiyama. If you arrive at Kyoto by JR, then do take the... More

My husband and I went to Kyoto for a week as part of our honeymoon. This hotel was simple, but had everything we needed. The rooms were spacious enough and the TV even had an English channel- although the films were ones we'd not heard of before, but it was nice to hear some English. The staff can't speak English... Convenient for sightseeing in Kyoto. Reception staff had poor English, but were polite. Breakfast was Japanese/Western, as mentioned on other reviews. Room was small but the free wi-fi made up for it! Launderette on the ground floor very useful. Definitely good value for money if you are on a budget.

Had a great stay at this Toyoko Inn. Desk people could have been a little more friendlier, but they weren't rude either. Room was a decent price, especially for Japan. Bought the Toyoko Club Card for 1500Y (you have to pay cash) and got a 30% discount on the second day. Japanese breakfast is included. Consists of musubi, miso soup,... More

Be early for breakfast! There is a mixed Japanese/Western buffet breakfast in the foyer area. Some foods do run out. The rooms are fairly cramped but clean and with TV and tea-making facilities. On the gound floor there is a coin-operated washing machine, tumbledryer and drink machine. There are also computers in the foyer. The staff do not speak much... More

Booked here by our agents. Arrived at the hotel - 15 mins before check-in, but were made to wait! Men sleeping in the lobby and checking out 'interesting' websites. Business Twin room - very strange - 2 of everything (TVs, kettles, fridges). Walk in - door to bathroom right in front of you. No more than a foot from the... More

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
