I visited Kyoto during Easter break and stayed in co-op inn Kyoto for 3 nights. For the location, it probably easier to take a taxi from the Kyoto station which costs about 1000 yen (not peak hour); it takes about 10 mins to walk form nearest subway station; If you have large luggage to carry around, probably not a very... We stayed here as two couples for five days while touring Japan. I would recommend this place as a good budget priced accommodation. The rooms were small (this is Japan), but quite comfortable and clean. The complimentary buffet breakfast had both western and Japanese selections. It was quite good and they changed the food selections daily. The staff was helpful... More

Stayed here during New Year holidays, and prices were good. Also we had breakfasts just for additional 500 yen. Place is near the centre. But the best think about this hotel is that all the building uses their own spring water, which is delicious!

I've stayed at this hotel twice in the past 3 years and both experiences have been good ones. As one might expect, the rooms are quite small by Western standards, but that is part of the Japanese ethos. My first stay I did have a small mishap where there was a leak from the bathroom that soaked the carpet and... More

Unfortunately I was only here for one night, and on my own, but I would happily have stayed longer. Kyoto is a great place and this hotel was a good base, next to a great food market and surrounded by restaurants of all budgets. What won me over though was the room. I arrived in the middle of the cherry... More

The location is excellent. In the very centre of Kyoto and close to the station. Rooms are small, as in most of Japanese hotels, but clean, and charming. The staff is nice, helpful and friendly. The price is reasonable and it is located in a quiet street.

The room is clean and reasonable priced. The staff is especially helpful. I booked the hotel online and later discovered that I have booked a smoking room. I requested to change but the staff replied that all non smoking rooms were already booked. However, they took note of this and immediately informed me when a non smoking room was available.... I stayed in the Coop Inn in December 2011 with my wife and 2 daughters. Right from the outset I'll say if you want a nice, clean inexpensive hotel within literally minutes of a multitude of shopping, transport and eating options, then look no further. Book the Coop Inn now. Located merely streets away from the famous Kyoto shopping arcades... More

Front desk staff was very helpful. Rooms were clean, quiet and comfortable. Everyone's pillows were a little lumpy and firmer than we're used to. There was free wi-fi and 3 desktop computers in the lobby (2 pc and one Mac) . Printing was available for 10 yen. In the room, you had to use a cable (was provided free) for... More

For a relatively inexpensive, central Kyoto hotel, the Co-Op Inn (a joint venture, I believe, of several of Kyoto's universities) was just fine. The rooms were small, but not claustrophobic, and everything was immaculately clean and tidy. The location is hard to beat, with good access to bus and subway connections, but in a fairly quiet part of town. The... More

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighborhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
