Pros: very close to JR station, hotel has onsite laundry facilities for 300yen to wash and 100yen to dry for 30mins, neat rooms Cons: smoke was evident on non-smoking floors constantly, we found 1-inch of mould growing on shower vents not addressed by house keeping, room constantly had a smell of mould emanating from the bathroom, and we found dust... The hotel is just round the corner of Shijo street which is an important street for shops and bus stops as well as subway train. Free Wifi is provided. However TV stations were all in Japanese and none in English. Dressing gowns also provided! The buffet breakfast consisted of both Japanese and European food to offer a wide choice. The... More

The hotel is conveniently located in central Kyoto, walking distance to Shijo metro Station (5 mins) wich makes it a perfect starting point for visiting Kyoto, provides good service and quiet and clean rooms, comfy beds, complementary bathroom essentials, free internet and cheap laundry service. Breakfast was just ok, the overall service was good and staff was kind and helpful.... More

Stayed for 4 nights August 2015. The Court Hotel is central to visit many of the main attractions in Kyoto. The hotel itself is relative small and hidden a little from the main road of Shijo. The room we had was pretty small with barely enough room for the suitcases, but comfortable enough and clean. The space limited space is... More

Well situated, within walking distance of Shijo subway station and several buses. Reception staff have limited English. The reception area and hotel corridors have almost a hostel atmosphere and could do with being freshened up. Our room was stuck in the corner of a corridor and the door looked more like a service entrance, but inside it was clean and... More

Don't be fooled by the entrance. The only thing going for this hotel is the location along Shijo area. Horribly uncomfortable small beds (soft, no springs or support) in small filthy room. Unbelievably poor housekeeping -- barely vacuumed, layers of dust on surfaces, cups, window sills (can't open window), grimy handle on mini-fridge. Ugh. I don't blame the daily cleaners... More

Nice room high in the building with a view that I requested. Room was a reasonable size. Staff are lovely and very helpful. Cocon is very close - a good place to eat. Easy to catch transport to the sites

I was quite happy with my two-night stay here. The room was obviously recently renovated and featured new furniture and some complementary regional snacks and tea. The location is superb if you are looking to be in the shijo area and traveling by train. I arrived by shinkansen and it was a straight shot on the subway to where the... More

+Location (walking distance from Geisha district) In front of Shijo Nishinotoin bus stop (from Kyoto sta. B2 bus 50) -The room is ok but keep in mind that you will have an "all in one" small old moldy plastic bathroom which needs maintenance and deep clean. Because of this, this hotel should not be 3 stars, in deed is better... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
