I stayed with my family just only one night in this ryokan. It was an amazing experience: a real Japanese house! Excellent location, in Gion district where you can access some of famous historic sights. Excellent food: you can taste a good meal cooked in Kyoto style. Excellent hospitality. Then you can soak in a warm outdoor and indoor Japanese... More

There aren't enough kind words to say about Gion Fukuzumi and their staff. My parents, sister, and I had an amazing experience during our 2 night stay...and my parents are difficult people to please. Our lady who was assigned to us was so sweet, caring, and thoughtful. This staff truly goes out of their way to create a 5 star... More

We were pleasantly suprised by the awesome location and quaintness of this medium-priced Ryokan. We arrived late afternoon and were met by a very pleasant staff who quickly showed us to our room which, although not a premium suite, was clean and neat with a great view of Chion-in temple and the Dimonji. We left to walk around Gion and... More

We stayed for two nights at this Ryokan as part of our 'Japanese experience' and by the end we wished we had stayed for longer! We arrived by train in the morning, and were allowed to leave our bags at the ryokan while we visited the sights of Kyoto. When we returned in the early evening, our bags had been... More

We stayed four night there in end of January. The location is at Gion only minutes away from Yasaka shrine and directly opposite Chion-in. It is a convenience location to visit other attractions. Although it is beside the main road and may hear some vehicle passing by noise but it did not bother us. The tatami room was clean and... More

Stayed here for a night in Kyoto and was amazed by the level of help and friendliness of everyone working in this Ryokan. The rooms were very well equipped and comfortable and breakfast was very traditional and served with a smile. Best of all was Mr Masawaki who spent so much time giving us detailed information and history of the... More

We stayed (unfortunately) only one night at the riokan but it was a wonderful experience that I hope to repeat. The location is superbe, just at the begining of Gion, seconds away from the tea houses. The service was excellent, reception and other personnel very friendly and ready to help and guide. The breakfast is almost legendary, not only because... More

My wife and I stayed at the Gion Fukuzumi for two nights. We opted for one of their traditional rooms, which had no bed. Instead, the room was cleared of furniture and futons were placed on the floor each night. I have to admit the futons were not the most comfortable sleeping accommodation, but they were authentic, and we were... More

Loved the location. Service was wonderful. Very clean and comfortable. Friendly service. Try the traditional Japanese breakfast. The staff are really wonderful and friendly. We were fortunate to have a Japanese speaker with us. Do not know how much English was available.

The position of the Ryokan is very good. We stayed here (me and husband) with our 6 years old son. While the furniture seems not brand new it was all very clean. For a trip to Japan you have to try this experience, tea served in room by a Japanese lady on arrival and dinner served again in your room.... More

Staying in Gion

Neighborhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
