We have stayed here on several occasions, this time was for 5 nights during a trip to see the cherry blossom. The hotel is very clean and friendly. We had a recently refurbished Japanese style room that was tastefully decorated, retaining it's original style. The room was spacious with a nice annex with a table and chair. The staff here... Overall a great place to stay in Kyoto whether is your first trip or not. Great location as the shopping district is just a door step away, also not to forget the local wet market is just around the corner. Lastly I have give two thumbs up for the stuff on their effectiveness and friendliness.

The people were very helpful, and the decor was great. The lady lead us into the room, and served us tea with sweets. Then in the traditional way went to the door, kneeled down by the door and slide it closed. There is a public bath in the basement, men and women seperated of course, that is very relaxing. I... I had stayed in this hotel for three nights and I will definitely introduce this place to all of my friend who come to Kyoto. The hotel is located in a very central of the city. The connection of either bus and train is very good. There are a lot of local shops, markets and restaurant nearby. However as they... More

I spent a couple of nights there and it is a very cool place to be it. Ryokan in the centre of Kyoto, well-placed in a crafts and trades district with decent access to other locations like Nijo Castle, Gion and Kinkakuji Temple. The rooms are OK sizewise - larger than average I saw in Japan, with tatami mats and... More

Stayed there March 13-15, 2015. Arrived early and they were very nice to hold the luggage for us to the extent that I told them that I have a laptop and camera equipment. We left and walked around while we waited and had a great time walking around Nishiki Market. All around the market they were celebrating their 400th anniversary.... More

On arrival we were shown to our 'traditional' Japanese room. Five minutes later we were discussing with initially a receptionist and then with a Manager that we were not prepared to stay in a room of the condition that we had been given. The walls were heavily marked and had water drips and stains of some description, the wooden elements... More

Right in the middle of the city, but in a quiet side street. Very friendly staff. Good futons, but covers are heavy. Functioning laundromat. Decent fridge. Shijo Dori (street) is very close and has both train and lots of busses to get you to all corners of the city.

My wife and I are both happy that we spent the night at WATAZEN RYOKAN. We felt that it was great for a ONE night experience, but no more than that. We checked in and then went out for dinner. The hotel is in a kind of middle class nieghborhood so we got a good feel for how people live... More

We stayed at Watazen for 5 nights and it was wonderful. From the JR Kyoto station it is just a short subway ride and walk to the hotel - with the help of goggle maps we had no trouble finding it the first time and we didn't have any trouble finding it without map help when coming and going during...
