Watazen is not a ryokan in the strict definition of one, but it is a good alternative to a faceless hotel in historical city. It gives you a taste of what it is like to sleep on tatami in the evening. It allows you your private bathroom (make sure you ask for you). It is right downtown. The service is... More

This is one of our most wonderful experience in Japan. The room was clean and cosy. We enjoyed everything here, from the traditional environment to the food. Staff was so friendly, professional and helpful. They helped us to find good restaurant and attraction. Their English was incredibly good. Thanks a lot. And this is my first experience with osen ever.... More

We had a wonderful traditional Japanese experience - the service was great and they helped to make us feel comfortable with the unfamiliar customs. We got the kaiseki dinner "for foreign tastes" and it was delicious and a really huge amount of food. I would highly recommend the dinner as part of the experience. The location is close to the... From the moment of arrival friendly welcoming service was the signature for this ryokan. The staff had surprisingly good English which was an unexpected bonus. The food was plentiful and good served by staff with a gentle sense of humor. The owner popped in for a visit which was a lovely touch. I really enjoyed the onsen which was quite... More

We stayed in this transitional ryokan where we can experience sleeping on tatami. My kids really enjoyed it because they get to wear the Traditonal Japanese bath robe. The mattress was very comfortable and the room temp was jus right. All of us had a great sleep. We have a private bathroom and it was very clean. We were all... More

We have stayed here on several occasions, this time was for 5 nights during a trip to see the cherry blossom. The hotel is very clean and friendly. We had a recently refurbished Japanese style room that was tastefully decorated, retaining it's original style. The room was spacious with a nice annex with a table and chair. The staff here... Overall a great place to stay in Kyoto whether is your first trip or not. Great location as the shopping district is just a door step away, also not to forget the local wet market is just around the corner. Lastly I have give two thumbs up for the stuff on their effectiveness and friendliness.

The people were very helpful, and the decor was great. The lady lead us into the room, and served us tea with sweets. Then in the traditional way went to the door, kneeled down by the door and slide it closed. There is a public bath in the basement, men and women seperated of course, that is very relaxing. I... I had stayed in this hotel for three nights and I will definitely introduce this place to all of my friend who come to Kyoto. The hotel is located in a very central of the city. The connection of either bus and train is very good. There are a lot of local shops, markets and restaurant nearby. However as they... More

I spent a couple of nights there and it is a very cool place to be it. Ryokan in the centre of Kyoto, well-placed in a crafts and trades district with decent access to other locations like Nijo Castle, Gion and Kinkakuji Temple. The rooms are OK sizewise - larger than average I saw in Japan, with tatami mats and... More
