Everything about this place is excellent. The front desk person remembers your name each time you return and hands you your key. The rooms are immaculate with the tatami mats and futons made with beautiful fabrics. A young woman greeted us with tea and snacks when we arrived. The bathroom is small but very efficient and modern, the latest in... More

This was our first experience in a traditional Japanese Ryokan and this inn made sure that we had an excellent one! When we first arrived we were greeted politely by a very friendly man (unfortunately can't remember his name now- older man, very pleasant with glasses whose name means 'under a tree'). His English was very good, and he explained... More

Me and my wife wanted to experience a Ryokan, and we wanted to have our own shower (I know it defeats the purpose a bit) - and we made a good choice with the Watazen. The room was the cleanest we have seen in quite a while, and the food was excellent (We had a shabu-shabu dinner and a western... More

This is a 'modern' Ryokan which mixes tradition (sleeping on futons on the tatami floor) with modern comforts (modern shower room, free internet). Meals (other than welcome tea) are not served in the rooms (as in some Ryokans) but in a communal dining room with western style tables and chairs (so you don't need to fear having to eat on... The hotel is recently renovated and all rooms have private bathrooms now (I guess they didn't use to before) When we got there they said because of a mixup in their system they have sold a room but don't actually have any. We had booked a ryokan because of the traditional experience we were hoping to have and they only... More

We stayed there for two nights last week. The rooms are relatively big with three partition. When you open the door, there's an area to put your shoes. The bathroom, sink and bath area are also here. Then you have a small area where the safe box, amenities and bedding are kept. There's another partition with a low Japanese table... More

Just as others have observed, this is not your typical or authentic ryokan, but it's provides a great ryokan experience for a foreigner with the pertinent aspects. It's tucked in a small road just a few blocks from the main shopping area of Kyoto, so it provides that nice residential feel and provides a quiet respite from the busy commercialized... More

Thank you for your comment to us. We are very sorry about that it was hard for you to find our place. We try to explain to our customers how to get to Watazen in easier way. However, it seems very difficult for foreiners. We believe that you could experience a little bit Japanese style, culture and people. We hope... More

Watazen was nicer than what I expected. The ryokan is located very conveniently near the shopping center, and the staffs were very kind. The comforter seemed to have a few stains here and there but the room was clean in general. I really liked the public bath which was really clean. Also, the breakfast option is highly recommended! Overall we... More

Watazen is not a ryokan in the strict definition of one, but it is a good alternative to a faceless hotel in historical city. It gives you a taste of what it is like to sleep on tatami in the evening. It allows you your private bathroom (make sure you ask for you). It is right downtown. The service is... More

This is one of our most wonderful experience in Japan. The room was clean and cosy. We enjoyed everything here, from the traditional environment to the food. Staff was so friendly, professional and helpful. They helped us to find good restaurant and attraction. Their English was incredibly good. Thanks a lot. And this is my first experience with osen ever.... More

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighborhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
