We stayed two nights in a traditional room on the ground floor. The room was a traditional tatami room opening out in to a wonderful garden. The whole end of the room that opened into the garden was glass, with shoji screens at the ready, making the view of the garden really beautiful. This is an old traditional hotel so... More

We would like to have an experience of traditional japanese stay and we choose Motonago Ryokan because of its placement and price. The Ryokan is situated in an old town of Gion that we can walking around in the small stone street with typical japanese architectures view, and luckily we had a chance to meet beautiful geishas! Hotel staff and... More

This was my first time on a ryokan so hard to compare but as a quintessential Japanese experience this was very impressive. Immaculate service and attention to detail - eg tea delivered to your room when you return fro sightseeing for the day. The ryokan is also spotless - you are using shared bathroom facilities but it never feels like... More

We stayed one night at ryokan Motonago. I have to say that everything was perfect. The decoration of the room, the location, the food (kaiseki dinner and breakfast) and the service. I strongly recommend Motonago as it is definitely a big hit in Kyoto.

Too many good things to say about this place. The staff was incredible and take great pride in the property and providing impeccable service. The location is hard to beat if you're in Kyoto to tour the sites and get a taste of "old" Japan. The property is old (we were told it has been a ryokan for over 100... More

We spent two nights at Motonago during our trip through Japan. We had decided to try out three different Ryokan in Kyoto since this was our first trip to Japan an we didn't really know what to expect. Motonago is a lovely place. It's located very conveniently - close to the magnificent Kyomizu-dera temple as well as the Gion district.... More

Like most people travelling to Japan we were advised to spend at least one night in a traditional ryokan. I came across this particular ryokan after many nights trawling through the web (we booked direct) I have to admit, I was very concerned about the costs as some were extremely expensive. We finally found the Motonago and booked straight away.... More

A traditional ryokan situated along the routes to the temples and the Gion district and was wonderful for my parents-in-laws to explore the older part of Kyoto. The ryokan itself was small and beautiful although a little on the steep side; it was overall still very much worth the experience and the Kaiseki dinner included was a beautiful representation in... This was our first ryokan experience and the first night of three in Kyoto. As it was cherry blossom season, the ryokan was fully booked and we could only stay for one night. We did not know what to expect, but were very pleasantly surprised by the entire experience. The ryokan was in a perfect location near the Gion district... More

Just an exceptional experience. Excellent location where you can walk to for shopping, eating and visiting. The bath was very relaxing, clean and soothing. Our room had a small refrigerator and overlooked the street. Restaurants close to this ryokan were expensive so we had our meals in our room. The meals were 5 star quality, tasty and traditional. We sent... More
