Charming hosts, excellent food, friendly and attentive; we really enjoyed our stay here and it felt as if we were the only guests staying, although plainly there were many others. We had dinner one evening which was very tasty. It is very well located. Would recommend thoroughly.

This was our first experience staying in a ryokan. The staff here are just lovely, very kind and helpful. The room is quite basic with no frills although I gather this is to be expected. We had a private toilet which I would recommend. The baths can be booked for 2 sessions daily to be taken privately which we loved... More

The best quality of the Ryokan Montonago is its located: nestled near the Gion district, adjacent to the Yasaka Shrine in the foothills of Higashiyama. Our Ryokan room was very large with separate dining and sleeping areas, two traditional sinks and traditional Japanese ladies and gentlemen’s toilet. A beautiful garden outside our room was also quite serene, although there was... More

Stayed for 2 nights in room with private bath and toilet. Ryokan's atmosphere very serene and staff was attentive and polite. Bed took some getting used to, if you're not used to sleeping on hard surface. Reserved a private bath both nights. First night was way too hot, had trouble staying for full hour. Was more tolerable on second night.... More

My girlfriend and I really enjoyed our stay at the ryokan. We couldn't have asked for a better service. The food was great; a real traditional meal for both the supper and the breakfast. The staff was really friendly, they made our stay feel like a real treat! Thank you!

My husband and I had stayed at Ryokan Motonago on the nights of Feb 18, 19, and 20th and I can say that the experience was definitely memorable (some good, some bad). Let me start off with the bad: First off, when we had arrived Kyoto JR station and handed the driver the "handy map" Motonago sent us by email... More

To experience a Ryokan is a must in Kyoto and Motonago is a great option. The location is perfect. Also, we loved the room and the food. After a day of walking around the city I would suggest a reservation in the common (and splendid) bath, then a massage (the staff can arrange that easily) and the 14 course dinner-... More

Our stay at Ryokan Motonago was delightful. The atmosphere is serene, the bath lovely and fragrant, the service fabulous, and the food delicious. It is located in a fabulous old neighborhood. The only thing I regret is that we could not stay longer!

We've just returned from spending three nights at the Ryokan Motonago. It appeared, from looking at maps and guidebooks before the trip, that the ryokan was located in the older part of Kyoto, but I had no idea, until we arrived and began to explore the Higashiyama area, how incredibly well situated it is. You literally can't turn around without... More

We enjoyed three nights at Motonago and would recommend it for outstanding service and great location in the Gion district of Kyoto, within walking distance a many wonderful temples and sights. Our upstairs room was very simple with tatami matts, AC, and tiny toilet room. There are two public baths on the first floor which can be booked in advance... More
