Motonago is a very charming, well located and with a friendly staff ryokan. I loved the tatame room, the way the futons are displayed as well the meals, always served in the room. Walking around the ryokan is simply amazing, as it is in the middle of the most traditional neibourhood of Kyoto. And I suggest a reservation for the... More

Really enjoyed our one night stay at Ryokan Motonago. We felt that we were able to experience abit of the traditional ryokan experience staying here. The set dinner and breakfast were great too; although if you had to pick between two, the dinner is more worth it. Our room was lovely with our own private toilet and garden. Location was... More

In the heart of a tourist district, this Ryokan just means convenience, less time wasted on travel, and lots within walking distance. Nishiki market, the food market to explore, is walkable. Many historic sights including a shrine and a pagoda, to see just outside the doorstep. You will be greeted by handsomely appointed staff, who speak English, and will show... More

We were in Japan for over two weeks and stayed in a combination of Japanese style and western style accommodation. Motonago was among our favourite. The location is unbeatable, the staff were friendly and helpful, and the ryokan itself was v comfortable (with the pleasing innovation of an en suite room! No more trips in the middle f the night... Spent 2 nights with dinner and breakfast in the ryokan in a group of 6 adults and 3 childrens (all under 4 years old). The location is excellent nearby Gion and famous Kiyomizu temple. Staffs are very helpful. We got their help to book us a maxi taxi (fit 9 peoples) in short amount of time. Kaiseki and shabu shabu... More

This is where one should stay if you are visiting Kyoto/Japan for the first time, want an authentic ryokan experience, still be conveniently located in the city, and does not need to break the bank. All the other reviews are quite apt, so I don't want to say much. I'll definitely stay here if I visit Kyoto again.

We loved our two nights at the Motonago--from the tiny little shrine in the room to the fluffy futons to the huge wooden bath that we dipped into each night before dinner in our room. The special keiseki meal was booked but we had shabu shabu, where we cooked our own meat and veggies at the table, as well as... More

Four of us spent one night at this ryokan and it was a very pleasant experience. We dropped the luggage in late morning and came back at 4 pm to check in. The staff were friendly, welcoming and very polite. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and the room was lovely with a small Japanese garden outside. Four of us stayed... More

Amazing ryokan that gives you a true Japanese experience! We only stayed one night, but I really did not want to leave this place. Such nice people working here and a very relaxed atmosphere. Our suite was huge, consisting of three rooms. You really get a feel for the Japanese lifestyle when you slip into a kimono, go and take... More
