Four of us spent one night at this ryokan and it was a very pleasant experience. We dropped the luggage in late morning and came back at 4 pm to check in. The staff were friendly, welcoming and very polite. Dinner and breakfast were delicious and the room was lovely with a small Japanese garden outside. Four of us stayed... More

Amazing ryokan that gives you a true Japanese experience! We only stayed one night, but I really did not want to leave this place. Such nice people working here and a very relaxed atmosphere. Our suite was huge, consisting of three rooms. You really get a feel for the Japanese lifestyle when you slip into a kimono, go and take... More

My husband and I spent one night here in November, 2013. It was a bit of a splurge but well worth it. The authentic Japanese experience and the amazing service were priceless. We really enjoyed the multi-course dinner (although, truthfully, we could not identify some of what we were eating), which we ate while seated at a table on the... More

A great introduction to a traditional Japanese inn. We were pampered from the moment we arrived until the moment we took our farewell photo. Recently remodeled, our room was immaculate with the subtle scent of tatami mats and a wonderful cedar soaking tub. The food was novel and delicious. But most of all, the service was extraordinary. They smilingly walked... More

We arrived earlier than the check-in time so we left our luggage at the ryokan. The minute we got in in the evening, our luggage was already in the room and we were shown our way to the room without us having to identify ourselves (amazing given that the staff who attended to us in the morning were different from... Pros: Everything in the room! Had room with private bathroom which included a wooden bathtub. Overlooked garden. Room was very large. Service was impeccable - attentive, smiles, felt like royalty. Dinner was amazing. Enjoyed every dish. Choose the Japanese breakfast. I thought it was better than the dinner because of the surprise factor. You will regret it if you don't... More

Motonago right from our arrival surpassed our expectations in every way! We arrived prior to the check in time so the room wasn't ready but they happily stored our luggage while we explored Kyoto. The ryokan was located in what we like to think is the traditional side of the city which made it so convenient for us to get... More

You couldn't ask for a better experience with the staff than you will get at Motonago. It was just great, and the whole experience felt like an authentic taste of Japan. You have to be prepared to sleep on futons in the true Japanese style, but the food, rooms, and ambience of this place will make for a great stay.

Food, service, public baths, room- all high quality. We enjoyed an excellent 4 days here. From the outside there is little to see and you would easily walk past it. Super location in Gion, close to the temples and in easy reach of the bus. Warm welcome, though we were early, kept our luggage so we could explore. Spacious room... More

The Motonago was a unique, once in a lifetime experience. This Ryokan is full of Japanese tradition, from having tea, sitting cross legged on the tatami floor in your kimono to unwinding after a day visiting temples in the amazing private onsen to breakfast in the stunning garden room, the Motonago really is something special. The staff are excellent, with... More
