I travelled via Japan back to New Zealand, after having been on an expedition on the Sea of Okhostk. I chose to spend 5 of my 8 days in Japan in Kyoto and was very pleased with that decision. Motonago is a Ryokan, a typical Japanese style hotel, or inn, letting you experience the real Japan while you're still in... More

We stayed one night in a wonderful room on the second floor with a private bath, and had the traditional dinner and breakfast served in the room. Everything was perfect, including the room, the service, the time we reserved in the public bath and the food. The location--in the old part of town near several temples and shrines--was ideal as... We stayed 3 nights in Motonago and took all of our breakfasts there. We also had a typical traditional dinner in our room on one night, definitely part of the experience. We were very pleased with the level of service we were offered. The ryokan is very clean. The staff speaks enough english for the day to day requests. The... More

Many hotels in Japan are called "ryokan": most of them are modern-style ryokan, but a few only are traditional ones and sometimes, you feel like tasting the special flavour of tradition and history, especially when it is in perfect combination with the location of the ryokan. Motonago is an absolutely traditional ryokan, located in an absolutely traditional place.

My partner and I spent a night here at the end of our visit to Kyoto. The food was incredible (we opted for both breakfast and dinner, and so should you!) and we enjoyed the private bath. I'd absolutely recommend this Ryokan to anyone visiting Kyoto.

I booked motonago based on trip advisor reviews. We could not have been happier with our choice. The location is perfect. Right in the old style part of kyoto, minutes walk to Gion, maranuma park ( most amazing luminated cherry blossom tree ) and several temples. Dinner/ breakfast were included daily in our room agreement - which seemed to be... More

Great service! Would definitely recommend this ryokan as it is quite centrally located. You can walk to Gion from there. The baths are slightly small compared to the other ryokans I have stayed at. Relatively easy to communicate with the staff. Good is good. We had the Western breakfast and did a dinner there one night. Both were great.

If you want to stay in a traditional Ryoken in Kyoto you must stay here. It is very centrally located to the Main Street and the staff are amazing. You will be blown away with the experience as long as you are an open minded traveller. If you are adamant to having all the luxuries in life and are not... More
