I stay here about once a year but like to re-review the places to ensure future guests that they are keeping their same decent standards. This little ryokan-style (Japanese inn) place is located on a quiet side street just 3 minutes on foot from Kyoto station. Rooms are small but comfortable enough, with clean, comfortable bedding (futons!). Amenities include TV,... More

To be recommended for guest who look for cheap and well located and clean japaneese styled accomodation. I know, we stayed here for 3 enjoyable nights. Some specifc comments: - very friendly and helpful hotel staff (the ypung guy) who speaks very good english - the room was floored with the tatami, hence a strong straw smell but you should... More

If you come to Kyoto White Hotel expecting a modern hotel or a traditonal Ryokan, you will be disappointed, because even though it calls itself hotel, it feels more like a guesthouse and even though it has tatami floors where you lay out your futon at night, it is not a beautiful Ryokan, but a functional guesthouse. On the one... More

The location was great, really close to the train station. It was perfect to explore the area around Kyoto. We selected it specifically so that we could travel to Nara, come back to Kyoto, go to Koyasan, come back, then travel to Tokyo. The train station had a lots of places to eat, including an Isetan department store, which had... More

I had booked this hotel because I was hoping for a more traditional Japanese ryokan experience, with tatami and futon bedding; this wasn’t quite that. Rather, the White Hotel reminds me more of an old fashioned apartment-styled building in Japan that happens to have tatami flooring, low table and floor sitting. The room itself is convenient, with amenities including fridge,... More

The hotel is within 5 min of the train station, but hidden in an alley. This makes it a bit hard to find at first, but it makes it very quiet even though it is in the middle of a bustling metropolis. The room was very basic but clean and well taken care of. Given the prices of other hotels... More

At the beginning the place looks a bit old and damaged but the room are okay. It is pretty cheap and staff really friendly. Location is just perfect everything around (metro station, starbucks, convinient stores etc..), you can also wash your clothes for free and there is a beer distributor inside ! If you go to Kyoto and are not... More

Location: This hotel is just 5 minutes walk from the station down a small alley way. However I had trouble finding it initially as there are several little alley ways that weren't on my guide book map. From here I was able to walk to all the attractions in south east Kyoto including Kiyomizu-dera (about 20 mins), Gion, Choin-in, and... More

The location is the best 5 min walking to Kyoto station, It can't be called a professional hotel the reason --> The hotel is owned by Japanese lady and she is running the show with her little bit English speaking staff, its definitely below furnished place but we were very clear what we wanted Bit bigger than Tiny Tripple room,... Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
