We stayed at Sumiya Ryokan in the heart of Kyoto for 2 nights and had a really nice stay. We were very well taken care of and looked after and had a wonderful visit. Remember when booking a ryokan that it is in traditional style - futons on the floor, eating meals in a floor-height table in your room. Very... More

We chose the Sumiya Ryokan as our first accommodation on our honeymoon in Japan. We absolutely fell in love with the place! The Sumiya is a traditional Ryokan and we were pampered and treated like royalty. The traditional Japanese breakfast and dinner they served us daily could easily compete for Michelin stars. I've never felt teary eyed leaving a hotel... More

The most impressive thing about the place is their service. Absolutely friendly and professional, I truly feel pampered by them. The interior is gorgeous but there are no wi-fi in the rooms. To get a signal one has to go to the library or lobby. The hot spring is pretty decent but sadly the view is rather disappointing, was hoping... More

The staff is kind and friendly, however the ryokan is too expensive in comparison to what they provide. Our room, Honami, was the biggest one, according to them, but big does not necessarily mean nice. We paid a lot of money to find ourselves close to the highway, with trucks and cars at few meters from the window of our... More

We stayed here as it's highly recommended by friends who are frequent visitor to Kyoto and Japan. And this ryokan live up to its reputation of delivering very good service and delicious food! While the room and the whole ryokan may feel old (which it is), we thought it adds to the authentic touch. It maybe more expensive than your... More

Onsen: 8/10. Food: 4/10. Service: 8/10. We read about this Ryokan online and when we saw that they offered day passes to their onsens, which included lunch we had to go. We sprung for the 80,000 yen deal which includes lunch, access to the main onsen, and 45 minute private booking of the open air onsen. We went on a... More

We stayed for two nights in May. We received a wonderful welcome, we had a marvellous stay and we had a lovely goodbye (or should that be "au revoir"???). Sumiya is a truly authentic place: if you want to experience a real Japan, we would recommend staying here. It was my wife's birthday and she was treated so well. Meals... More

I stayed in Sumiya twice, one solo trip and recently I took my mum with me. The Kaiseki was excellent, every dish is artistically crafted- the portion of each dish is very small and you really need to slow down to taste them to see the efforts the chef put in them. But the whole meal is able to make... More

One night stay as we toured Kyoto for Sakura 2014 Overall the service was very pleasant. Kaiseki was excellent- really a great meal and very focused service. Room was pleasant but like the rest of the Ryokan it's a bit dark and there is not really charming park/garden to look out onto....I mean they have one, but it seems quite... More

I went to Japan for business, and had a crazy travel schedule. I only had one day to tour around in Tokyo and one day in Kyoto. I splurged on Sumiya Ryokan while visiting Kyoto, and boy, was it worth it. It was really expensive, as I was a single occupant (so I had to pay double occupancy); that said,... More
