My two nights stay was superb at Hotel Okura. We have enjoyed our stay a lot. I was very impressed with the service provided by the hotel. The rooms were spacious with large bathrooms. also provided all the luxury bath amenities. The hotel is too old but maintained very well. Reception to roof top everywhere very clean. Food also good... More

spent 3 days in Sept 2014. Rooms were immaculate, updated, and comfortable. Plenty of shopping, bars, restaurants, all within walking distance. Way above Tokyo hotels costing more. Highly recommend for discerning traveler.

We stayed a few nights here: a beautiful hotel with a fantastic service level. We have enjoyed our stay a lot, large rooms, very good shower, very good bed and a really great breakfast buffet at the 17th floor, with a beautiful view over Kyoto. Please make sure to take a 1 minute omelette with cheese, which is prepared in... More

I was very impressed with the service at this hotel starting from the moment you check in to checking out. Rooms were very spacious even for Japan standard. Breakfast was decent though not a lot of variety for western food. My only complaint is on the tour agency they use for one of their half day trips. The tour (JTB... More

The Okura has a fantastic location, essentially connected to the subway, an underground mall and near the gion and shopping arcades as well as Nishiki market. What really sets it apart is the impeccable service from the bell-hops and concierge. The finishing touch is the free shuttle bus to and from Kyoto station every half hour (with, get this, a... This is a lovely hotel. We stayed here for 4 nights recently as part of our family holiday in Japan. We had two twin rooms and the hotel accommodated our request to have rooms adjacent to one another. The rooms were large and well appointed. I don;t think I have been in a hotel with so many free toiletries in... More

The Kyoto Hotel Okura is a very dated hotel that transports you back to a different era, ca. late 1980s. It gets the basics right but is in urgent need of a revamp. Location The hotel is conveniently located north of downtown Kyoto and in walking distance of Pontocho, the Teramachi covered arcade and the shops & department stores on... More

The hotel is centrally located. The check in and check out was quick. The rooms are neat and modern. The traditional Japanese hospitality was present throughout the hotel. Breakfast was included and was in the rooftop restaurant which had magnificant views of the city. Be aware that coffee in your room is not free and will incur a charge!! The... More

We stayed 3 nights - unbelievable costumer service at the Kyoto Hotel Okura. The rooms were spacious with large bathrooms. The hotel has an elegant feel to it but is slightly dated - after all, this year it is celebrating 127 years. I understand the most recent major renovation was about 20 years ago. Still, it is very nicely maintained.... More

My wife and I stayed here for two nights during a stay in Kyoto. This hotel is conveniently located in the city center, above a metro stop. Every taxi driver understands what you are saying when you say you need a ride to this hotel. The service at the hotel was great. They were able to get us reservations to... More

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
