Our stay at Okura was rather fleeting, but a wonderful experience, nonetheless. We scored a freak deal by booking from a Japanese website (with the help of a local). The deal was last-minute and only for one night, hence our short stay. We dearly wanted to stay longer, but the prices skyrocketed back to 5-star standard. When we arrived at... More

Very friendly and professional welcome at reception desk. Excellent service with great respect. Typical Japanese interior design (melange of English Imperial and Japanese modern looks) make this a grand hotel (not my style though). the Orizzonte breakfast area has some awesome Panorama on Kyoto river-city with sunrise! Refined breakfast buffet with cooks on the spot for Japanese style omelets... One... More

The single room I stayed is practically the size of a typical Japanese business hotel. But, it came with a nice view of the city as well as very comfy bedding and furniture. It was a functional room indeed. Plus, its location is simply unbeatable, close to nishiki and the center of the city. (One suggestion: it could have been... More

I had pretty high expectations for this hotel but can only say I was rather disappointed. The lobby felt grand and the staff were pretty friendly. However the rooms were pretty disappointing. We travelled in a group staying at one twin room and one single room. Our rooms were on same floor just 3 doors apart but there was a... More

Good location and it seems that the hotel is well known as all of the taxi drivers recognize it. Besides, there were many taxi on standby. The interior is dated, and I actually prefer modern interior. However, what annoyed me most was that, the hotel did not provide bottled waters. I understand that we can just drink water right from... It was our first time in Kyoto, and we chose Kyoto Hotel Okura as our base. Overall, we are happy with our stay. The size of the room was large enough with nice view. The staffs were friendly and helpful. The location is nice and convenient to get to many highlight palaces and shrines by Taxi, and also near shopping... More

During the recent visit to Japan we stopped in Kyoto, this hotel offered great size rooms, the concierge service was amazing, as neither of us spoke Japanese. The hotels position made it ideal for visiting local attractions and restaurant. We visited most of the city by foot and found it beautiful and amazing. The hotel got into the spirit of... More

Pros: 1) Well located with easy access to shopping and eating establishments 2) The room and bathroom are spacious Cons: 1) the decor is a little dated 2) need to pay to use gym 3) grouchy concierge . No smiles as if my request for restaurant recommendation is too tiresome for her . Has the impression she doesn't like to... More

Stayed for 3 Nights. Excellent Experience. The Hotel Staff was very nice right from the folks at the porch to the manager including the room service along with house keeping. Must say they really make your stay memorable. View from the room was also just so amazing. We could see the full moon right outside our window.

We checked-in late at midnight so perhaps that might explain the reception agent's grumpiness. We did get a nice upgrade to a corner suite. The room was very clean. The dated furnishings and bathroom didn't bother us at all. Service was impeccable, from doorman to concierge. Location can't be beat, close to shopping, the river, Gion, and on top of... More

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
