This is a lovely hotel. We stayed here for 4 nights recently as part of our family holiday in Japan. We had two twin rooms and the hotel accommodated our request to have rooms adjacent to one another. The rooms were large and well appointed. I don;t think I have been in a hotel with so many free toiletries in... More

The Kyoto Hotel Okura is a very dated hotel that transports you back to a different era, ca. late 1980s. It gets the basics right but is in urgent need of a revamp. Location The hotel is conveniently located north of downtown Kyoto and in walking distance of Pontocho, the Teramachi covered arcade and the shops & department stores on... More

The hotel is centrally located. The check in and check out was quick. The rooms are neat and modern. The traditional Japanese hospitality was present throughout the hotel. Breakfast was included and was in the rooftop restaurant which had magnificant views of the city. Be aware that coffee in your room is not free and will incur a charge!! The... More

We stayed 3 nights - unbelievable costumer service at the Kyoto Hotel Okura. The rooms were spacious with large bathrooms. The hotel has an elegant feel to it but is slightly dated - after all, this year it is celebrating 127 years. I understand the most recent major renovation was about 20 years ago. Still, it is very nicely maintained.... More

My wife and I stayed here for two nights during a stay in Kyoto. This hotel is conveniently located in the city center, above a metro stop. Every taxi driver understands what you are saying when you say you need a ride to this hotel. The service at the hotel was great. They were able to get us reservations to... More

Hotel facility is great. Convenient for shopping, updated rooms, clean. Front desk staff unfriendly, arrogant, find every reason to say no. Where is the Japanese hospitality???? Restaurant service are great with great food selections with both western and eastern style breakfast buffet.

We're westerners, so not used to twin beds, but the restaurants in the hotel are exceptional, the staff was friendly and we were across from City Hall, adjacent to a huge community mall & market in the heart of downtown.

I stayed 3 nights in the Kyoto Hotel Okura in Kyoto, and it was a wonderful experience. The staff was warm and welcoming, and the hotel was very nice. Our room had 3 single beds, and seemed very large by Japanese standards. We had a beautiful view of the mountains, and they provided a nice map identifying the different ridges,... More

The hotel is great overall, with a nice location on top of a metro station, which makes it easy to get around town. Good breakfast and nice service. The rooms are a bit dated though, but clean and reasonably sized. Would definitely stay there again when visiting Kyoto, good value for money. The restaurants aren't that great though.

It was my birthday when we stayed there. We went to some restaurants by recommendation of the concierge. Those restaurants are so sophisticated, and it is a fusion of a traditional and global atmosphere. They really satisfied us. The desk of the hotel is also nice and friendly to us. If we have a chance to stay in Kyoto again,... More

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
