Staff is friendly. Allow us to check in early. The room have a feel of studio apartment with small kitchen. The space is big compare to other hotel I stayed in Japan, which is mostly quite small. It is short bus ride to Kyoto station and the bus service here is connected bus to various tourist spot in Kyoto.

I really liked this place - the staff were helpful, though not always on hand, the rooms were quiet and well put together, and the cpu in the room was great for letting me backup my pictures to the cloud each day to make sure I didn't lose anything. The only downsides I can speak of is it's a bit... More

This time i will reviewing about Higland Shimabara,Kyoto. I stay just one night, book this hotel from website (booking.com), but about 7 days in advance prior to your arrival date, the hotel will ask you to make full payment. The location is just about 10 minutes bus ride, or 5 minutes taxi ride from Kyoto Station. In front of this... More

Very good place! Rooms are very clean and modern. Location is good. The only issue is that given that there is no front desk, you don't have someone to ask questions about the city. However, there is a computer in the room where you can solve those questions.

My friend and I booked a twin room in the Highland Shimbara and being our first night in Japan, this was a great start to our trip. It is around a 15 minute walk (30 if you are lugging a chunky suitcase) from Kyoto station. We did struggle to find it, but I blame that on our lack of experience... More

I don't know that I will add anything that hasn't been said already but at least we are one more couple to add our voice. This is not a fancy place but it was comfortable and the location works well. We arrived in the pouring rain so took a cab from Kyoto Station. It is within walking distance (20 solid minutes)... More

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights with 3 rooms for twin sharing in October 2014. I have went through most of the review before I did the booking and yet I have made the correct decision. The stay was marvelous and everyone was so happy with the small kitchen provided as well as the comfortable bed and clean... More

Shimabara offers self-contained flats in a modern building - they have pretty much everything you need: good beds, dining table, desk, small kitchen, bathroom. We were very comfortable. The wifi was the best (in terms of speed and 100% reliability) we found in Japanese hotels. Excellent value for the price (less than ¥8,000/night). The only shortcoming is the lack of... More

Great value for money. A 20 minute walk from Kyoto station, although there are buses which stop right in front of the apartments. The apartments have everything you could need and they are a decent size. The staff aren't around much but there is an intercom you can buzz to get in contact with them. You pay via paypal one... Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
