My friend and I booked a twin room in the Highland Shimbara and being our first night in Japan, this was a great start to our trip. It is around a 15 minute walk (30 if you are lugging a chunky suitcase) from Kyoto station. We did struggle to find it, but I blame that on our lack of experience... More

I don't know that I will add anything that hasn't been said already but at least we are one more couple to add our voice. This is not a fancy place but it was comfortable and the location works well. We arrived in the pouring rain so took a cab from Kyoto Station. It is within walking distance (20 solid minutes)... More

We stayed in this hotel for 3 nights with 3 rooms for twin sharing in October 2014. I have went through most of the review before I did the booking and yet I have made the correct decision. The stay was marvelous and everyone was so happy with the small kitchen provided as well as the comfortable bed and clean... More

Shimabara offers self-contained flats in a modern building - they have pretty much everything you need: good beds, dining table, desk, small kitchen, bathroom. We were very comfortable. The wifi was the best (in terms of speed and 100% reliability) we found in Japanese hotels. Excellent value for the price (less than ¥8,000/night). The only shortcoming is the lack of... More

Great value for money. A 20 minute walk from Kyoto station, although there are buses which stop right in front of the apartments. The apartments have everything you could need and they are a decent size. The staff aren't around much but there is an intercom you can buzz to get in contact with them. You pay via paypal one... You have you small appartment in the middle of Kyoto for a very good price. You have you own kitchen, toilets, a terrace, a cool bathroom typical japanese and a very nice a wide room. The bed was excellent and we slept like babies for a week. You are nearby lawsons and 7eleven as well as not too far from... More

We stayed here for 5 nights. First of all it's large (two seperate large beds), clean and airconditioning. The shower is very good and the toilet is seperate which is comfortable. There are two doors before going out, so it's very quiet. Ask a room at the back of the hotel, those are really quiet. There's a tv, computer (even... More

We liked everything about this place, it was the perfect stay in Kyoto, we would have definitely stayed longer here but too bad we had to follow our trip plan. If we ever travel again to Kyoto we'll check this place first of all!

I was amazed when I found this place on Booking.com - and was a little nervous that it wouldn't be as good as it seemed. It was lovely to find that it was even better - very convenient location, spacious, well equipped and very clean. Highly recommended. We had a friendly welcome when we arrived mid-afternoon - this was the... More
