The location of this place is not particulary interesting, but it was close to my destinations, so nothing to complain about there! Transport is not far away either. The hotel is clean, staff is friendly (although I didn't understand anything they said), I can especially vouch for the nice lady that served our breakfast! They did their best to serve... More

The very traditional Japanese-style hotel. I booked the room online recommended by the other hotel. I like the environment and the boss. And the traffic there is very good, you can buy the 1-day bus ticket there. The important is the reasonable price. It is a pity that there are no Japanese-style food!

My friend and I stayed here three nights in mid-November 2013. We each had a Japanese-style room to ourselves. While I probably would not opt to stay in a ryokan (traditional Japanese hotel) for the entire trip, it was a wonderful experience. The woman who runs the ryokan speaks enough English but I would not say she is fluent. She... More

This wasn't our first choice as we arrived in kyoto,we wanted tot stay at a hostel but due to the obvious high season ,no room available..so we called this ryokan. What a pleasant surprise!not only they had a room for us..it was traditional Japanse style room! The owner (older woman) spoke good english and was very helpful! I definitely recommend... More

Found this charming Ryokan thanks to Le Guide du Routard and stayed there in January 2011 for four nights. Two friends came to join me and liked it too. The owners - two women - were very nice and helpful. The location was great, not too far from the Station and easy to walk to. Nice little street . I... More

Stayed for 3 nights. On the 1st night that we reach Kansai Airport, it was already about 1030pm after we clear the custom at Kansai Airport. We informed Ryokan owner that we will be late and by the time we reach the Ryokan, it's about 1am. Luckily the owner is still awake to wait for us. We are staying at... More

Stayed here for 2 nights, Staff was OK, could have been more friendlier though. There is a sento/public bath nearby, which is not so bad. Location feel a bit out the place, you need a long walk or take a bus to reach the center of the city. pros : Price -obviously- cons : location

I stumbled onto this Ryokan when I could not find anything else end of November 2011. First of all I must say I am NOT a Ryokan person. Sleeping on futons on tatami floors at this Ryokan was fine for me but I had the hardest time struggling to get off the floor every morning as my knees don't work... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
