The ryokan is well described by the other reviews here, but we felt that we would not have booked here if we had known how little sleep we would have got here. With the paper-thin walls and lack of curtains – together with one of the other guests fancying themselves as a singer-songwriter, another sounding like he had sleep apnoea and... More

Location cannot be beat, as it is so close to Central Kyoto station, but still quiet as well. Close to the bus stops I used to get to many parts of town as well. Room size was very big and comfortable. The restroom was a bit dated and the washer toilet did not work. Staff was very accommodating and friendly... More

Comfortable room for couples with own private bath, serviced each day. The room was a good size for what we needed and bedding was adequate and comfortable. Perhaps the only downfall was the 1130pm curfew, but otherwise really happy with the quality of stay. Nice and close to Kyoto Station and within walking distance to bike hire so you can... More

Sleeping on the floor is not my thing but this ryokan makes it better by providing private facilities for each room. Our room was fairly large but still didn’t have adequate room for suitcases. The futons were reasonably comfortable. There was a TV in the room but we couldn’t figure out how to make it work. There was also a... More

This traditional ryokan is situated two or three blocks from Kyoto station. Despite one or two negative reviews I've seen here I found the staff eager and helpful, the room everything I could want in a traditional ryokan, the prices very reasonable and of course the location near the station very convenient. I sometimes think some of the reviews I... More

My wife and I stayed last week - we had a lovely room and our sons an adjacent room. Rooms were lovely and clean and traditional, in that you sleep on the floor on a kind of futon bed. The owner was lovely - and speaks English. We liked the small touches - tea and coffee making, your own pyjamas,... More

We decided to try a ryokan to experience the traditional way of the Japanese, which this ryokan had it all. We were greeted & checked in by the owner who was so ever pleasant. The room was big with ensuite as requested. They even had a look out garden from our room, which was a soothing sight. The whole place... More

Great location for sightseeing Kyoto, nice Japanese experience, very nice staff and excellent breakfast for starting day. Rooms rather simple but cosy. Wifi available only in the reception. All in all good and worth going to.

This quaint little ryokan is located in a narrow alley within easy walking distance of Kyoto Station, but that doesn't detract from its charm. It's a small family-run operation, and the owners are quite friendly and accommodating. They stored our luggage for the day even after we checked out while we explored Kyoto. We had two rooms, the only two... More

Other than the good location of the hotel and relatively lower room rates, the service level is not what I had expected from the Japanese. Upon arrival at 3pm which was the check in time, the tiny lobby was dark with lights turned off and no one to be seen. We had to call out loudly 'konnichiwa!' before the lady... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
