We were very impressed with the staff who were very helpful and friendly and the rooms were very clean and comfortable. We loved access to the shuttle bus for free - so convenient for travel to Kyoto Station. The hotel is across the road from the Castle so this was convenient too for one of our tours. We found the... The staff was beyond helpful. They were the most kind and courteous hotel employees we have ever experienced. The hotel is 1 block from the bus and subway stop. Hotel provides a free shuttle to the train station. The rooms are very dated with design and furniture. Shows a lot of use, but the overall experience was still very good.

Approaching the hotel we were horrified at some of the nasty, really awful TA reviews. Therefore, one could argue, "we were looking for trouble" . . . . super critical. Let's start with the negatives, then positives, and final recommendation. I ignore dingbat TA reviews complaining about lack of hamburgers, lack of US TV, etc etc . . . .... More

The good, the odd and the shabby. And a Tip. The Good: location, lovely lobby, most helpful staff and delicious breakfast. Front desk staff was especially respectful and kind. The Odd: The hotel has a lovely large lobby...with few chairs to relax, read, chat or meet friends. There are a few comfy chairs which are all in a row...facing a... More

Enjoyed our stay at this hotel. The courtesy bus getting us to and from Kyoto JR was fantastic. The location near Nijo Castle was very handy too. We found all the stagg gave us excellent service whenever we had questions or needed anything - to me this is one of the most important aspects of any hotel. It is a... More

Unfortunately we stayed at the Crowne Osaka beforehand where we were upgraded to the Crowne Club rooms and amenities which included breakfast (which we didn't originally request at all) in the VIP room and full use of the bar including delicious snacks between 5 and 8pm. Then we hit Kyoto and what can only be the diametric opposite to the... More

Dear PerthSpray, Thank you for taking the time to share your recent experience with us. I am glad that you found our hotel staff highly commendable. On the other hand, it disheartening that some aspects of our hotel fell below your expectations, particularly the unusual smell, and I apologize for any inconvenience these may have caused. Rest assured that your... More

We stayed at ANA Crowne Plaza midway during our 3 week tour of Japan. This hotel stood out from the others as being the most comfortable of them all. Staff friendly and provided assistance at all times. Rooms were spacious for Japan standards and beds were comfortable. Within walking distance of most attractions. Very impressed.

Run, don't walk to get away from this place Horrible hotel. Kyoto is a fabulous place, don't ruin it with a bad hotel experience. The hostels in town are better. I read the mixed reviews on TA, and figured I'd give it a try as I have always had great experiences at IHG hotels, and figured it might not be... More

Location beside the castle is a little out of the way but there is a free shuttle to Kyoto station and the taxis and public transport are excellent. Room comfortable and clean, bathroom is a normal western size which is unusual at this pricepoint. All the normal amenities of an international standard hotel. We stayed a week and found it... More

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
