The hostel is located at a very good place inside of the Gion district. First of all the staff is very friendly and it is possible to store your luggage here before checking in and after checking out. We chose to stay in a private room which was of decent size and very clean. There are enough facilities to provide... More

Fun little sake stop en route to dinner in Gion. We didn't stay at the hostel but all of the people we met while at the bar seemed to enjoy staying there. They also had a lot of good tourist books for guests to review and a wide selection of sake. We did a sampler of (3) and then got... More

The hostel is also very clean. The sake bar is great and worth a visit. The only problem is that the showers are in the 3rd floor and our bedroom was in the 2nd. Also we can not drop our bags before 3 am (check in). But the station just in front has coin lockers. Would stay here again.

Stayed here for three nights and it was very good. Great location in Kyoto, easy to find. Friendly staff and very spacious rooms. Would recommend...very cheap! Reception not open until 3pm which is the only annoying thing if you arrive in the morning.

Review is for the sake bar, didn't stay in the hostel (need a new entry on TripAdvisor just for the bar!). As a previous reviewer has said, the sake bar is great, with a huge selection plus tasting options. Staff really nice, some great design decor, and delicious reasonably-priced sake to taste. Also good location not far from Gion.

I stayed here 1 night in April, I arrived around 2 pm and couldn't check in or drop my bags till 3 pm, the reception (which is really just a sake bar) is closed through the middle of the day, so I had to lug my bag around till it opened. The location is very good, in the heart of... More

We visited Kyoto in one of the busiest weekends of the year, during the last weekend of the cherry blossom, with school holidays in Japan, so availability of the hostels/hotels was very limited. About the hostel self is not too much to say, other than that the location is key here. Smack in Gion district, close to busses, metro, shops... More

Only reviewing the bar. My wife and I stopped by here after a long day of exploring Kyoto. We both really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere that is created by the friendly staff/owners and the decor. They have a huge variety of sakes and I enjoyed the 3 glass sample set for JPY1000. They also serve some bar snacks that go... More

Staying in Gion

Neighborhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
