This is an ok choice in Kyoto: location is excellent, the hostel itself is average. You sleep in some kind of capsule, which is fine basically, but the A/C does not reach it when you close your curtain, so it can get really hot inside. One of the showers did not have cool water, which really is a problem in... More

This hostel is a branch of Kaosoan Hostel in Kyoto. (There three more of Kaosan hostels in Tokyo.) Kaosan Theater is smaller than the main hostel and it is more like a capsultel i.e. 8 capsultels in the room. EacH capsule has a AC ventilator and a couple of hangers for your clothes. However, the toilets were much bigger and... More

We were in the female 8 bed dorm. Our roommates were quiet and even though the overhead light was always on, the curtains for each pod kept it nice and dark. The lockers underneath the beds made things easy and our stuff felt safe. We also appreciated the lounge area near the laundry and the bar in the basement. Locationwise,... More

I stayed in Khaosan World for two nights in Tokyo. So I stayed in another khaosan hostel in Kyoto, for convenience's sake. It located near Gion, a busy shopping street and food market. It's perfect. It's also within reasonable walking distance from bus stop. The hostel itself is a bit cramped. The dorm room is comfortable enough, but we don't... More

I stayed at this hostel between May 20-24th. This hostel was great; not only was it central to all of the tourist attractions I wanted to see, but the staff went above and beyond to help me plan my day trips and to make sure I understood which bus and subway routes to take each day. Major transit routes to... More

The lovely curtained dorm beds was what we appreciated about this trendy and comfortable hostel situated close to the metro station. The neighbouring streets are packed with delightful shops, cafes and boutiques with plenty of kitsch/artsy/curated stuff. The female dorms are well done with individual beds, lockers and common shower areas. However the flip side to our experience here was... More

I had to review this hostel not only because it ticks all the boxes you would want, namely: cleanliness, all the amenities provided, coziness, value, great location. But the main reason is because the staff are nothing short of fantastic. They speak impeccable english, are attentive and very helpful. They helped us find the only pub in Kyoto which was... More

I really enjoyed our brief stay in this hostel. Location is great, in the centre of town and within walking distance of lots of sights and a short walk to the metro or bus stops. Lots of eateries and bars nearby as well as a bar in the basement. The place was spotlessly clean including the shared bathroom. Staff were... More

If you're hesitant, that's completely understandable. When I first heard capsule hotel, all I imagined was a weird sci-fi-ish nightmare where I'd be sleeping in a pod out of the movies...so this caught me off guard (in a great way!). We had four of us stay in the same room which had two rows of about 10 or more "capsules".... More

Excellent ratio price:quality. Well located, clean beds and rooms, very hot water in the toilettes, good wifi, and washing machines. In the last floor there is a kitchen and some space to have breakfast, lunch, or dinner.

Staying in Shinkyogoku Shopping District

Neighborhood Profile
Shinkyogoku Shopping District
Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
