I stayed here with my parents in May 2015. I'd done Japan alone the previous year entirely in capsule hotels, but I wanted to find a place that would be a little nicer for my parents. It has a perfect location for sightseeing. You can wake up and see more than a day's worth of sights without taking any transport.... More

I stayed there for 2 nights, the owner is very friendly. There is shared toilet and Japanese style bathroom. Good price for those who want to live in traditional japanese room. And if you are lucky, you can see 2 cats (should be owner's pets) walking around the common area.

Excellent value! The location is very central and Gion is the best area for Geisha spotting and exploring Kyoto. The inn itself is situated down a quiet but arty alley and is a short walk to the riverside. From here you can find all the nice restaurants, bars and train stations. The decor was so cute and beautiful and the owner... More

The host is very eager to help although he is a quiet man. The place is located in an alley between sanjo and shijo of Gion where Keihan Gion-shijo/sanjo station, subway sanjo station, Kyoto city bus stop all in walking distance. The place has some distance to the main shopping street so it's quiet however quite dark if you return... More

This little inn was a great place to explore Kyoto from. It is in a small alley not very far away from Gion and also other forms of transportation. Taking public transport from the shinkansen station might be a little difficult, but I would recommend going via taxi. Can't remember exactly how much it was but it makes locating the... More

It is my first time to stay in an Japanese guesthouse with my friend. The owner is very friendly, polite and is active to advise us the surrounding area, guide us and stuff. The location is very convenient, we also really enjoyed walking through Shirakawa 白川 every morning to the subway. The shared bathroom and the room is cozy and clean.... More

The Kiraku Inn combines in a very charming way best location (in the district of Gion) with a homey atmosphere, cleanliness and nice hostel operators, and all that for quite a reasonable price. The rooms are extremely small, but very clean. At full occupancy the entrance was rather crowded with all the shoes of the guests, and also the common... More

We had trouble with their online reservation system and weren't able to get a confirmation so we called a couple of times. Their English is so poor and when we tried to speak in Japanese they were extremely rude and told us that if we dont want to stay there then we shouldnt. I was so shocked to see such... More

Great location, cleanliness, I highly recommend this place to stay in Kyoto Gion. We stayed in dorms( probably ladies only but it was only 2500 yen for a night) and everything was very clean and neat. There was subway station and Hankyu main station near the hostel you can easily walk. The staff was very friendly, we had a comfortable... More

Staying in Gion

Neighborhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
