Having never been to Japan, and being on a budget as a student, my partner and I wanted somewhere that was not a hotel, but not a hostel either. Sakara was just amazing, and perfect for returning to after a long day looking at temples and falling onto the couch or bed! We stayed in the ninja room which has... More

Our family of 3 adults 2 kids stayed in Sakara Hinoki suite for 3 nights. The room is perfect for five of us. There is a queen size bed and single bed downstairs, and a double bed in the loft. The room is clean, and has a fully equipped kitchen - microwave oven, hob, fridge, toaster, plates, cutlery, pots, cups,... More

Thank you for staying with us, and for your comments. To better serve our guests in the summer and winter months we are going to have ceiling fans installed in both the Hinoki Suite and Ninja room. This should help air circulation and ensure that the living and sleeping areas stay comfortable all year round. -mgmt. More

We did a fair bit of research before booking our 10-day stay in the Bamboo Suite at Sakara. We were looking for a reasonably priced single level, self catering apartment, with washing machine and wi-fi, which was also convenient to groceries, restaurants and transport. The Bamboo Suite delivered on all those criteria. On arrival we were checked in by a... More

This unassuming, from the outside, place is located on a small covered shopping mall in the Higashiyama area. Our family of three (9 yr old son) stayed for three nights in October in the Sakura room. My sister and her husband stayed in the Ninja room. Our room was a bit small by American standards, but wonderfully and efficiently laid... More

We stayed here for 3 nights in the Ninja room, which has a nice modern touch. The room was better than I anticipated. Very clean and comfortable. We were ~20 minutes walking distance from all the action (bars and restaurants) but the walk was always very enjoyable. The hotel is located very close to the subway station and within a... More

Thank you Germaine - Everyone who stays in the Ninja room comments about the size and layout - even though it is compact, there is everything that you need, and the arrangement even provides space for couples to spend some relaxing time upstairs, downstairs, at the cafe-style table or on the sofa chaise lounge with 80cm wide mattress. Happy that... More

My family and I stayed for a few days at Hinoki suite in August. We came from Spain and having no knowledge of Japanese, both staff, Yuko and Mike did speak English with us and were outstandingly helpful. The room was perfect for the four of us, nicely decorated and everything worked perfectly (including wifi internet). They also helped us... More

Thank you Luis, we are always happy to help visitors figure out how to make the most of their time in Kyoto. Takyubin luggage delivery services are very cost-effective and a good way to deal with transfers within Japan. If you have things delivered to us, we can receive baggage the day before or the day of your arrival, and... More

I went with my parents who were visiting Japan. The place is clean, conveniently located with bus & trains. Owners are friendly. Excellent value for your money. It was slightly tricky for the taxi driver to find though. Ask for specific information before you leave home and you'll be all set!

Thank you Armelle. Yes, with taxi drivers it is important to print out the access information that we send with your confirmation, but even then unfortunately it is true that from time to time a guest will encounter a taxi driver who is determined to get lost! Some taxi drivers refuse to believe the directions, but we have updated our... More

We stayed here for a week with our 2 year old son in the Bamboo Suite during September. The (walking) proximity to shrines, playgrounds, Gion Corner, the canal (for afternoon paddles) plus the close subway and buses made it a great base from which we explored Kyoto. The team were really helpful recommending areas we wouldn't previously have explored too.... More

Stayed at Sakara for 5 nights in April this year. I originally wanted the Ninja room but Sakara was unable to accommodate all 5 nights so I looked else where. Then, a couple of days later, my husband and I decided that Sakara does offer the convenience of a service apartment and so we decided to stay a night elsewhere... More

3 friends stayed 4 nights in the Sakura room and loved it. The facilities are great and the room seemed very new. It was easy to find, well-priced and in a fantastic location, within walking distance to Gion, Ponto cho and all the Higashiyama sights. We also loved opening the window and listening to the jazz being played in the... More

Thank you very much, and it was great to help you find what you needed to enjoy Kyoto. We always enjoy sharing our favorite recommendations with adventurous travelers.
