We stayed at the Kandra Kyoto for 5 nights. It’s a modern boutique hotel located close to a subway line station and walking distance to Kyoto Stations and several key temples in Kyoto. You will need to catch a quick and easy train, bus or taxi to head out for dinner in Porto Cho or Gion. You find the hotel... More

4 nights with family. Highs - super friendly and warm staff, eager to help. Indefatigably kind. Akiko in particular went out of her way to make us feel welcome as a family with small children. Cedar bathtub incredibly refreshing after trudging around city Location not in heavily touristed area and very close to Kyoto station Attached restaurant is superb. 7-11... More

I loved this hotel. We had a great room that was huge. The wooden tub was so delicious after long walking days. The hotel even smells good. The front desk staff were great, helping us book great restaurants and shows. If I was in Kyoto I would definitely stay here.

We just finished staying at this amazing boutique hotel - myself, husband, and two kids (aged 12 and 10). We absolutely loved this hotel! You sense you are in a special place when you walk in and it smells like a spa oasis...goodbye stress! It also looks beautiful. This hotel is chic, modern, minimalist and Japanese which is exactly what... More

Small and stylish boutique property. The rooms and public spaces are modern and stylish with strong Japanese design influences. The location is reasonably central for most Kyoto sites. A special thanks to the front desk staff who were all exceptional and wonderfully helpful and informative. Highly recommended.

Conveniently located, though off the most obvious geisha / geiko trails. Stylish and comfortable hotel with strongly Japanese sensibilities and possibly the most fragrant entrance of any hotel I've ever stayed at! Kajira on the front desk was the most helpful, conscientious and considerate concierge we've ever had the pleasure of working with. Great advice and recommendations!

Excellent service, beautiful hotel, great location. It is not a guarantee to see Geishas. We were advised to see a Fish Festival to see Geishas during day light and up close. We would use this hotel again.

Hotel Kanra is such a wonderful place with an amazing staff and beautifully appointed rooms that feature tatami mats and cedar furo tubs! It is a blend of the traditional Ryokans of old Kyoto and the luxury hotels of modern Japan. They do have a limited number of guest rooms so book early if you can. We'd stay here again... More

My husband and I were in awe of the chic, modern, architecture and interior of Kanra! The room was spacious and asthecially amazing! The bathroom was something out of a magazine! Chic, beautiful, sexy and relaxing all at once! The bed was huge and comfortable! The cool ambiance of the room was refreshing and a pleasure to return to after... More

This hotel is a boutique hotel. The room price was a bit steep but considering it was during the Sakura month, I guess it was only fair and the industry standard. The room we had was big with two double bed joined together with four poster. There was also a tatami style living room which was equally spacious. The front... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
