What a beautiful and serene hotel, It is very much like a modern version of an old traditional Kyoto Inn. The rooms are spacious and very comfortable. They have traditional tatami rooms as well as those with a western bed. The service at this small boutique hotel is nothing less than sublime. We were greeted at the front desk by... More

I researched hotels in Kyoto for almost a year. My main concerns were the service ( English speaking staff), the size of the hotel room and bathroom? Since my friend is 6'3" I was worried of the size of Japanese hotel rooms. I found Hotel Kanra via tripadvisor ( love), I used Expedia, paid in advance with free cancellation a... More

I have never given a review on TripAdvisor, but loved this hotel so much that I felt compelled to do so. The hotel is absolutely beautiful in a minimalistic Japanese way -- the room has a miniature moss garden, bamboo screen dividers and a gorgeous cypress wood bath tub. I found that this hotel actually offered the best balance in... More

We are a family of 4 and the accommodation was perfect for our family. The rooms are quiet and beds luxurious and are comfortable. It is boutique hotel which makes it a little personal. Staff are truly polite, genuinely helpful and friendly. The restaurant was ok. I thought it had so much potential but perhaps we are a little spoilt... More

Stayed here for 2 nights only, but if we have more time, definitely would stay longer! From staff to room facilities, here is superb! I like the room atmosphere, so comfortable. The bathroom is well designed! A big bath tub and a very cool sulpture inside. I love to use the hair blow dryer here as well, so effiecient and... More

Online booking without too much research, but had good reviews on TA and is quite close to Kyoto rail station - we were arriving by Shinkansen. The main entrance is actually on a side street not the main road, so slightly tricky and fairly low key looking, however inside very clean and modern looking. Lobby staff were extremely helpful with... More

great for families and getaways. A very modern hotel with tatami. Breakfasts abit overpriced. Whether you were an adult or a 1 year old they charged you all the same being 2000 yen approx. Service was attentive however, great english speakers and went the extra mile to help you with directions, booking art classes or cleaning up a broken class... More

The room has a beautiful wooden furnished interior kept in good condition. The staff were very helpful and friendly throughout our stay there. The hotel is just next to the Gojo station on the Kyoto subway line and is a short 10 min walk away from Kyoto station. Convenient to get to Shijo via subway too for any shopping/dining! Area... Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
