Me and my husband went on backpacking trip to Kyoto, and I must said that Hostel Mundo is one of the best backpacking hostel in Kyoto! Even though the room is quite small (we opt for the Western-style bed) but for 4500 yen per night, its worth it. The service is excellent, the staff can converse in English, it has... More

The hostel is 20min bus from Kyoto station and about 10min walk from Nijo castle (which I highly recommend). From the bus stop it's a 7min walk and most of it is down a straight street so it's not too hard to find. They email you great instructions when you book. The cheapest way to book for us was directly... More

Hostel Mundo was a very good option for us in Kyoto. We stayed in two of there rooms, one with a western double (very small room) and one large traditional room. Both were very acceptable for what we were paying (4500 - 5500 yen). You can also high bikes for 500 yen a day which is very useful. The location... More

The hostel is a traditional Kyoto home that I believe is about a century old. We had the room overlooking the garden. It was comfortable, clean and cute. Really helpful and friendly staff made our 3 nights even better. Great value! I would love to go back someday.

Stayed here for 3 days. The manager is a very lovely lady and help me in getting to know the surrounding area well. telling me about hot baths close to the hostel (which is very nice as it was a cold autumn during my stay. The hostel is very traditional like. but if you have a big luggage you might... More

The Good: As in most of Kyoto, some houses still retain its original wood structures and building facade, and we were so pleased to find Hostel Mundo so well taken care of and preserved. If you ever wondered what it was like to live in a traditional Japanese house, this would be your chance. It is a bit squeeze, we... More

Hostel Mundo is a 100 years old traditional wooden house in the heart of Kyoto. It is run by a team of very cute young guys that will make you feel like home, they will do their best to help you planning your sightseeing day in Kyoto and welcome you in the evening with a warm smile and a cup... Stayed here for 2 nights. Staff were very nice. Great English and more than happy to help you out. Room was fine (simple tatami) with comfortable bedding. Free wifi was a good bonus. However, the house doesn't receive much light so it can be a bit dark. If you're over 6ft you WILL bang your head several times as doorways... More

I stayed only one night and I'm looking forward to stay there if I have the opportunity to go to Kyoto again. The place is cozy and clean, the staff is very helpful and the location is perfect. I traveled with my husband and the girl in charge of the hostel helped us to plan our route around the city.... More

We stayed here for one night. The building is very lovely traditional Japanese style. Staffs are helpful. Shower room and restroom is ok. But hostel's location is pretty far from Kyoto Station and not suite for large luggage.

Staying in Nishijin District

Neighborhood Profile
Nishijin District
A district with a long textile heritage, ancient Kyoto is still alive in the Nishijin District. Studded with its weaving factories, tea houses, and onsen, the neighborhood is charming and peaceful with a self-possessed air. Less traveled than other parts of the city, it is a district where you can take it at your own pace. Visitors can explore the many weaving and cloth houses, the free kimono shows, and the many shops selling traditional clothing and goods. Showcasing architecture with sloping roofs and wooden reliefs dating to decades past, the streets in the Nishijin District transport you back in time, making them a joy to wander.
