Amazing guest house in the heart of Kyoto. The welcoming is incredibly warm and the guest house is very stylish and clean. The hosts are very helpful and you can get cooking lessons and bicycles. I strongly recommend this to anyone who wants to have an original experience.

The owners and staff of Roujiya are very welcoming, kind and helpful with tips on where to eat and visit in Kyoto. The location is brilliant - just off Sanjo market, 10 minutes walk from Nijo Castle and station (Nijo-Mae). We opted for the private tatami room which was great, the bathrooms are always clean and we never had to... More

My fiancé and I stayed here for three nights. It was clean, friendly and even the bunk rooms were "private" due to the curtains for each bunk. The hostel has specific rules one must follow, but the owners and attendants are super nice and welcoming. We would definitely stay again!

I stayed in the 8 person bunk room. It was ok for comfort. The staff are very friendly and helped with washing and giving some advice about Kyoto. We rented bikes from them, ranging from 500 to 1500 yen for the day. Definitely do this if you want to see the real beauty to Kyoto's back roads. It was quiet... More

Our family of 5 stayed for three nights at the Roujiya. It was a terrific experience for us all. Great location just a short bike ride from the city centre and right adjacent to markets. Would return in a heart beat

The house looks from outside not so special. But when I entered the house, I felt home. Nice and clean. I booked over the internet and got a confirmation. When I arrived, they excused that there was a problem and no free bed. But he would give me as excuse an apartment for free of charge. He drove me free... More

I stayed 4 nights at Roujiya in April 2013 with a friend. It was a great break from the typical hostel. This is a more intimate guest house where the owners actually live too. It's newly renovated with a blend of modern and traditional Japanese aesthetic, from the nicely appointed streamlined kitchen to a room with old school tatami mats... More

I've stayed at many guesthouse in Japan including the widely acclaimed K's. I have to say that this guesthouse is absolutely great for me. After reading many reviews about this place I also have to agree that it's not for everyone. If you are looking for a clean, friendly, and quiet environment (after a long day of site seeing) than... A very nice place, managed by a very nice couple. Room is clean and comfortable. Location is also good, near the supermarket, a couple of small restaurants and a public bath. Only 5-10 minutes walk to the train station.

It's been 1 and a half years since my stay, I should have reviewed on this guesthouse earlier because it was Sooooooo GOOD. I got a lot of time before I went to Fukushima for some sorts of disaster relief project, so I decided to stop at Kyoto for a few days, it’s always been my favourite destination. The guest... More

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
