My first impression about the twin room was, this is pretty intimate; but like the Tardis there was more to it than met the eye. The futons flip up to store your stuff, the shower is an awesome piece of technology, and the mattresses offer a surprising amount of comfort. The other places I stayed in during my 3 weeks... More

This Ryokan is very cheap but the location is difficult to beat. The room itself is not very spacious but it is enough for sleeping well and have a great shower. The people on reception are extremely kind and ready to help.

I seldom rave about a hotel, but this place has it all. Excellent location near trains and shops. Thoughtfully designed rooms which cater for all reasonable needs. It is a bit quirky in that it is a capsule ryokan so the rooms are small and you sleep on mattresses on a tatami platform. My room had a perfectly usable en suite.... More

Location by Kyoto station makes it easy to find and get to more places on the shinkansen lines for day trips. Bus routes also good within kyoto, arriving just outside. Service is welcoming and really good with plenty of local information provided without having to ask. Room was clean and comfortable and the shower was amazing (feature of the room)!

Booked a couple of rooms via email for my group of 5 people and stayed for 2 nights. Loved this place, both of the front desk staff we spoke to were friendly and happy to help with things to do/eat/see in the area, and the place was kept very clean. I stayed in one of the capsules which was interesting... More

I stayed in a small ryokan styled room and could not have been more pleased with the accommodation. Excellent central yet quiet location, comfortable bedding, complementary open access to small but greatly appreciated items like razors, toothpaste, hangers and spot lighting. Most notable was the obviously genuine and generous efforts of the staff to welcome and provide friendly advice to... More

It's a budget hotel, 8 min walking from Kyoto Station, clean facilities. Kyoto was our base for 10 nights while we travelled to Osaka, Nara, Uji, Himeji, Kobe, Mount Koya, and Hiroshima. We were two (me and wife) sharing a room. Very nice shower. Large room for luggage under the tatami-bed. Good place to get a good night's sleep and... More

My girlfriend and I came to Kyoto for a couple days from Tokyo on the bullet train. The hostel is very closely located to the station and easy to find. The staff were very friendly and helpful particularly with places to visit and how to get around. The private room was very nice and had all the amenities required for... More

I stayed here for a week in January 2016 and was really impressed - very welcoming staff, an excellent (free) handbook containing important addresses in Kyoto and suggestions for day trips, clean and comfortable rooms.. The hotel has both regular rooms and custom-designed capsule chambers. Two of my friends stayed in the former whilst I stayed in the latter. We... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
