I booked single room and was warned in advance by the staff that it was tiny. But I thought it was lovely! I had my own bathroom and shower, bed (Japanese style tatami, but with soft Western pillow), yukata (Japanese robe), air con, TV and tea making facilities in the room. There was room for a large suitcase to fit... More

Love this place. So homey. So lovely. Staff are very nice and accommodating. Patiently answered all our plenty of inqueries. Not for people who are loud since you can hear people from the other room when they talk. Not all Taxis know the place. So better use google map or waze. Love the neighborhood. Its so clean. You really get... More

We spent 3 nights in the Ryokan and found it very adequate. The rooms have everything one needs. The only issue (in general with small Ryokans) is the noise from both the street and neighbouring rooms, which can at times be bothersome. The location is good, but not great - a 10 min walk to most of the interesting places.... More

We stayed in a duplex house with 2 bedrooms, kitchen, living room & bathroom. Very traditional Japanese style & clean house. We traveled with 2 kids and stay in really relax & comfortable environment, just like at home. You must try to stay in this type of house if travel to Japan.

we booked whole house & it is big & comfortable. we could cooking inside & quite relaxing actually. the place is peaceful & not so far from train station, walk distance is ok. although it is a bit expensive but in peak season at Kyoto that is still acceptable.

Thank you for your stay and rating. We are very glad that you seemed to have a good stay overall. As you mentioned, the price is extremely high during the peak season in Kyoto. However, we are featured the lower price in comparison with other Ryokans. we always hope all of our guests stay here and experience real traditional Japanese... More

But difficult to find. We got a taxi as I hAd tried to find on foot day before and couldn't so didn't want a repeat when we had our luggage. Reception very friendly got them through a phone when we arrived. Friend and I booked separately so be warned there are about 6 buildings and it's about a good3-5 min... More

Thank you for your stay and rating. We are glad that you seemed to enjoy your stay without any critical problems. To give our guests more comfortable stay, we always tell our guests to keep quiet especially at night and in the morning at their check-in. Hopefully, thinness of the wall, which is one feature of traditional Japanese town houses,... More

Hotel is only a few minutes walk from the station so handy for getting around to the sights. It is located in a residential area so is quiet and enables you to see the real side of Japenese life. The staff were extremely helpful and gave us great advice about transport options. Certainly glad we chose to stay here.

This Ryokan was a huge disappointment for both of us, as we came recommended by a friend who stayed here some years ago and our experience was totally different. The room we were given was probably the worst in the whole ryokan, the one next to the front door but we didn't compain about it. On the first night, we... More

Thank you for your honest evaluation. However, there might be a possible misunderstanding for other trip Advisor user, so please excuse us to explain about that by our side, too, for the fairness. First of all, we are sorry to say, but the attempted break-in at night is not our fault. We are always trying to offer a better stay... More

Perfect for wanting more of a traditional Japanese experience! Welcoming, friendly staff. They had just opened their new bar which was great! Also loved the private open air hot tub outside. Would recommend other travellers to stay here.

My partner and I stayed here some years ago, so when we brought some friends to Kyoto we chose this ryokan again. We find the location convenient and in a very old and interesting part of the city. Our friends were delighted with such a traditional Japanese experience (including dressing up in kimonos for photos). It's an easy walk from... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
