When we set foot on the pier at Arashiyama we were greeted by an immediate smile by the waiting attendant and the private boat that would guide us to the hotel/ryokan. The facilities at the boat waiting room which included hot towels and free wifi were impressive and indicative of an exclusive resort (and would come in handy when returning... More

There are no words to describe the location of this resort. You simply have to look at the photos and imagine you are there - built over the Arashiyama mountains and surrounded by trees with shades of beautiful reds, oranges and yellows (if you choose the high peak autumn season), with the tranquil flow of the river below. The experience... More

We visited Kyoto to see the history and culture of the city. We booked 3 nights in the Ritz Carlton ( outstanding hotel) and our travel agent told us we should experience a Ryokan hotel - it was a mistake in Kyoto. We stayed in another Ryokan - Aburaya Tousen - Snow Monkey territory which ticked the box! The other... More

This hotel blends Japanese style and hospitality with modern comfort perfectly. The service was flawless - the boat transport to the hotel, the in-room orientation and check-in, in-hotel dining and personalised service were impeccable. The small, discrete touches made our stay so special: beautiful tea (and tea sets) in the rooms, a selection of atmospheric music to play in your... More

The beautiful site on a fast flowing river is relaxing and restful, especially if you are lucky enough to have a room looking directly onto it. The boat trip up and down would be a drag if you stayed longer than a couple of nights, but we didn't and so thought it magical. Service was full of bowing but execution... More

It was our romantic escape. Just few kilometres outside Arashiyama (Kyoto famous district), in the forest; accessible via private shuttle boat. Perfect welcome with traditional music, tea preparing celebration and sweets. Very attentive staff. Quite delicious, full of choice breakfast (European or Japanese style) and exceptional restaurant. This is a fabulously beautiful, peaceful place in the bustle of Kyoto - easy walking to all the sights in Arishiyama - otherwise close to the subway (walking distance off the boat), although we took taxis for convenience (apart from Arishiyama). We had a wonderful room (one-bedroom) overlooking the Ooi river with the sounds and sights (deer) every morning and... More

We arrived here, on the banks of the serene Oigawa river, by private boat. This fabulous resort, a renovated 100-year-old hostelry, blends Japanese culture with modern comforts (e.g., automatic toilet seat). Yuri, our gracious, English-speaking host, discussed our “itinerary”: tea ceremony, incense burning ceremony, and booked a kaiseki dinner, which was superb and room service breakfast was also incredible--lost count... Certainly, this is a pretty resort. But, oddly, I didn't like it. Hoshinoya is modern ryokan. Very sleek, stylish looking rooms that blend a modern hotel bathroom plucked from the Mandarin Oriental or Grand Hyatt with tatamis and futons. The grounds of the property are equally stylish, sleek, and manicured, even if they are small. The setting is attractive, but... More

Waking up and looking out across the gorge was like living in our own Japanese painting - especially on the misty morning when the deer came down to the river. The boat ride to the hotel is very charming, but sometimes a brisk walk was what was needed. The service was at all times thoughtful and professional. The dinners were... More
