I would give this hostel a 5 star as beds were comfy, showers hot and powerful, breakfast included, nice common area to meet people, great location, and cheap ... But .... The downside is that the dorms are pretty cramped and not a lot of space for rucksacks or suitcases (and if your a boy, the boys dorm is fairly... More

The bedroom was very small, it was hard to find a place for suitcases, but it was clean, the beds had curtain, it is well located and the staff is great, always happy to help, they gave me good advises.

I stayed in the female dorm and, I can't deny it, the space is tiny. However, I stayed for two nights and could have stayed for a couple more. It does get a little cramped. But you deal with so many situations in dorms, this is hardly the worst. The besa were clean and comfy. Showers in the dorm. Staff... More

I boked this hostel, as it was pretty much the only place left in Kyoto (I went during cherry blossom season). It was a good find - reasonably priced, great location, easy to find. I did find it a bit of a struggle to meet people here though. There were 2 10 bed dorms, one for men and one for... More

Great location, right in the middle of Kyoto's most beautiful area. The hostel is split over the 3rd and 5th floors of an apartment block, with the reception and dorms on the 3rd and the common room on the 5th. Beds are comfortable and have privacy curtains, and the showers and toilets are clean. The staff speak decent English. The... More

Location: Very good and convenient. 5-10min walk to Gion Shijo station/ Gion area/ Shijo, ponto-cho area. 2-3min walk from the bus stop "Gion" or 1min from "Chion-in mae". However if you want to access the less touristy spots (via Kyoto station), you will need to take bus to Kyoto station first before departing for your destination, so it maybe added... More

The staffs are friendly to answer my requests and enquiry even though not very fluent in English. They provide clear written information on the notice board which help me to plan my trip. I like the common area where we can sit down to chat with free flow coffee or tea and meet new friends.

The hostel is well priced and is in a great location. The staff there are really friendly and helpful and the common area upstairs is an added bonus. If you're heading to Kyoto, definitely consider staying here

A-Yado Gion is on a quiet street just a stone's throw from the Gion area...close to Nishiki Food Market, shopping, train, subway, and bus stations. The hostel is really clean and the staff is extremely helpful. The dorm beds have privacy curtains and individual lamps and outlets for each bed. It can get a little cramped in the dorms as... More

This hostel was amazing. I definitely recommend it if you are in Gion. There aren't many rooms and it is small but it makes it great because you get to meet amazing people. Also, all the places are very tiny (hostels, restaurants, shops, etc). The staff was simply perfect. They helped us with absolutely everything. When you arrive, they take... More

Staying in Gion

Neighborhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
