I traveled to Kyoto last week and stayed in the hotel “Kyomachiya Ryokan Sakura Honganji”. A western staff (maybe he is the owner) asked me to sign a contract, which only for Asian customers speaking Chinese. A staff told me that western customers did not have to sign a contract in English version. I reckon this behavior is a... More

My husband booked this ryokan and the trip to Japan as a surprise anniversary gift to me. After he had done all the basic legwork, I read some not so favourable reviews about this ryokan and went there with some trepidation. However, my husband and I liked it! It is a good 10 - 15 min walk from the station... More

I stayed for 2 nights, and it was nice. I read some reviews that this ryokan was quite noisy, but when I stayed there, it didn't as noisy as I thought. The room was not that spacious but clean enough. The location was not so close to Tokyo station, it took about 15 minutes walk. The ryokan was really close... More

Brandly new riokan in a hidden and dark street 10 min walking from Kyoto station. Very small room if you compare to real high price. Breakfast is not included. Remember to book it the day before or morning time there around you'll be lucky if you find ramen. The laundry last 10 minutes and cost 500y and the things are... More

Nice hotel, friendly and helpful, multilingual staff. Reasonably priced for the area, located a short walk from kyoto station. The rooms were spacious and comfortable. Staff were happy to recommend various things to do in the city for the time of year that we otherwise would not have known about, which was much appreciated.

We are staying in the hotel as I write this. The walls in the hotel are understandably thin, so we were prepared to be flexible but also quiet after certain hours out of respect for other guests. Unfortunately, the room we got is next to an incredibly loud couple with a young-ish child. They are constantly scolding her to the... More

Really enjoyed staying in the traditional tea house themed ryokan, clean room, comfy jap futon and friendly staff. Ryokan is a bus away from Kyoto station, if you enjoy a quaint Neighbourhood with restaurants and cafes around, this is an ideal choice!

The Ryokan experience was what we expected. We were disappointed though with the size of the room and the particularly tiny bathroom. (For the money we paid). We set up our bed each night and put it away each day, you could leave it out but then there was little space left. Location was a 15 minute walk to Kyoto... More

Overall the hotel was fine. The staff were nice, the breakfast was good and it was walking distance to kyoto station. On the downside the walls were really thin. Luckily we were on the upper floor with only one neighbouring room. Unfortunately they were night owls who would often come back late and make noise. The beds were really hard... More

Clean room and Helpful staffs. Location is around 12-15 min walk from Kyoto station. However there is not much of restaurants around Ryokan but with just few minutes walk you should be able to find some good Japanese restaurants around you.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
