This is a low budget hostel and my suggestion if you have a little bit more money please stay somewhere else. The staff is not friendly and they are kind of rude, to tell people do not do this, do not do that. I think they just do not want to work or do anything. You have to pay to... More

Last summer I visited Kyoto and chose this hostel to stay for only 1 night. I arrived late about 9 pm and the hostel was already closed and really dark. After one day then I wanted to check out, maybe 9 am and the worker asked me money due to earlier check out. I think it didn't make a sense,... More

My friend and I stayed here on a recent visit to Kyoto—my friend had stayed here previously, so that is why we decided to book here. Upon arrival, my friend was disappointed to see the hostel has actually moved a few doors down and is no longer at the quirky premises it was at previously. I had a single room... More

The hostel is very clean and has cool vibe with tatami mats and old pictures of Kyoto covering the walls. There is only one shared bathroom, which can get a bit crowded at times. However, the location is perfect and though everything is pretty basic I found all I need. The roof top is pretty cool to chill out and... More

Compared to the rest of Kyoto the price for this hostel was pretty reasonable. It was pretty standard for a hostel, basically everything was shared. The location however was fantastic. The neighbourhood had plenty of shrines and businesses to walk around. It wasn't too long to walk from Kyoto station and could reach Kiyomizu temple. And it was really close... More

We paid for a private room for 2 for just one night in this hotel and the experience was good. The room was clean, and had some facilities like tv, sofa, hairdrier, free wifi and air conditioner but we didn't need to use it since our room had 2 wide windows with view to the river. They have one toilet... More

We stayed here for three nights in December to explore Kyoto a little. I stayed here almost four years ago and remember there being a second location just up the road. Not sure what happened, but the warnings posted all over the hostel about noise and the police being called leads me to think that the culprits were some overly... More

This is an okay place to stay considering the price and location (a group of us rented the 6-person room), but just a few things made me think some other small hostels in the same area might be better value. It was definitely not the cleanest place i've stayed at in Japan. It wasn't terrible, but it wasn't what I... More

Staying in Gion

Neighborhood Profile
Gion
Gion is Kyoto's famed Geisha District (called "Geiko" in Kyoto). Though Gion's many tea houses and entertainment restaurants are closed to foreigners, Geiko and Maiko in their traditional makeup with gilded hair in full kimono can be seen drifting the streets on their way to and from work, where they fan dance, sing, and play instruments for customers. Gion lights up at night, when the ancient-looking streets glow with lanterns along the river, where weeping willows catch the starlight and the air is warmed with conversation. Groups pass through to populate the restaurants and bars along the riverfront, but Gion still manages to be a mostly quiet district, due in large part to limited automotive traffic through many of its streets. Gion is a wonderful place to indulge in Kyoto's local and customary cuisines, and is best enjoyed after dark.
