Typical of the Toyoko Inn brand, this hotel is clean and modestly priced. The breakfast area is small, and finding a seat can be a problem. The food items are limited. There are only two washers and dryers. The hotel is in the city near shops and food. It is not far from the train station, but not close enough... More

Returning to this hotel after exploring the beauty of Kyoto's temples and shrines is a depressing experience. It's a cheap business hotel and it looks and feel that way. The location is alright but far from ideal. The rooms are ok too, but aesthetically unappealing. The free wifi they advertise didn't work most of the time. And the breakfast ...... More

This is at the more budget end of the spectrum but is nice enough. Rooms are predictably cosy in size but not too bad. Breakfast was ok, not a lot of choice or space but again not too bad. I have two main gripes - the beds are HARD. I know this is a bit of a cultural thing but... More

I have stayed at this Toyoko inn location several times already. The price performance of this chain has always exceeded my expectation. The hotel is within a 5 minute walk to the gojo karasuma subway station and about a 5 minute walk to Shijo karasuma ( a big intersection with shops, restaurants and subway interchange). There is a family mart... More

It is located in middle of Shijo Karasuma and Gojo Karasuma. About 5-10 min walks to both Shijo Karasuma bus station and Gojo Karasuma subway depends on your walking speed. It is situated at a place where tourist spots are easily accessible through bus only (one day pass for bus is cheaper than one day pass for bus and subway),... More

Good location, close to the train line and easy to find. As per all Japanese hotels they are small in size so don't expect big western style rooms. Well priced and probably better suited to a travelling couple than a family or backpacker. Clean rooms, bathroom and toilet. Make sure you are on a non smoling floor. Staff are well... More

This is one of two Toyoko Inn chain hotels that we stayed in during our 10 days in Japan and they were very similar in look and feel. Very small room and bathroom but clean, quiet and conveniently located 5 mins walk from Gojo station, which is one subway stop from the main Kyoto Station. Friendly staff and the breakfast... More

Thanks to TripAdvisor found the hotel easily. From Kyoto station take Karasuma line subway to Kojo station turn left at corner - can see McDonald's across the road. Hotel is on left just before Family Mart. Staff were cool at first but later friendly. Speak some English. We always get a twin room & have plenty of space but not... More

Nice hotel, very friendly staff with English a million times better than my Japanese. Lift to all floors. Room was spotless and had everything necessary for a comfortable stay. Breakfast was included in the price, was served 7-10am in the large reception area and was a help yourself buffet with both Western and Japanese food all of which was lovely.... More

One stop from Kyoto station, 5 minute walk and you're there. Via subway, you get quickly to most of the shrines and temples or you just walk downtown within 10 minutes. It's clean, rooms are not too tiny and an okay breakfast is included. Perfect for the price you pay.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
