Hostel Kanouya was a real cultural experience. I have made several trips to Kyoto (I live in another city), but never have I learnt so much about Japanese traditional culture in just one weekend. The hostel was very easy to find, in a lovely traditional area, surrounded by really interesting places - a German bakery, kimono shop etc. and all... More

Kanouya is located in the heart of Kyoto, near the Nijo castle and halfway to temples in the East and the West. If you take the time to walk around the Machiyas (old houses) you will feel like you are in a small village with older people, craftsmen, and artists. It is also walking distance to the Nishijin Textile center... More

First and foremost, this is NOT A HOSTEL. It is deceitful to market it as one. It is a sub-par homestay at best. It took us 2 hours to find this place, hidden down a side alley in a dingy area filled with gambling joints. The website does not provide the address in English, only kanji which we cannot read.... This is not a Motel. This is Hostel. Did you stayed here? You wrote many wrong information. Reguler price is 2,500yen. Not a 25,000yen. You didn't stay. You created based on the opinion of others. Why war is forever in the world? Nobody understand for each other. Justice is what? Attack the different values? Travelling is what? Enjoy the different... More

My friend warned me about a bad review regarding Kanouya on Trip Advisor. This worried me but I must say I had a very nice stay. The owner was kind and helpful showing me the way to local restaurants and a bath house. Yes, there are many things in a small space (most of which are gifts from previous guests),... More

I'm realy sorry to say, but this hostel was nothing I expected from so called traditional Japanese house. First of all this is private home, not real hostel. So you basically live with the young owner. This place is small, smelly, uncomfortable and above all DIRTY. It also has a lot of unreasonable rules that makes no sense - especially... More
