Incredible stay. It was like beeing at home. The family was so incredible nice and helpfull. From the first moment they made us feel like at our own house. They helped us with our stay, sightseeing and all we could need. Located in a very nice and calm part of kyoto ( like a small village) but surrounded by 4... More

I stayed at the guest house for 3 nights and loved it there. Transportation was fairly easy especially after the owner recommended getting one day bus tickets. There's also local food which was amazing and cheap! The guest house is perfect for 2-3 people and the owner is super nice and hardworking. He even gave me a ride to the... More

We loved our stay at Kazuo-san's place. It's a very nice laid-back neighbourhood next to a temple complex without any tourists. If you use the bikes (definitely cheaper than elsewhere!) it's great cruising around the riverbank to the city centre or to the philosopher's path. The bamboo garden and Kinkakuji are a nice ride as well.Lots of restaurants and local... More

...However, we didn't find these to be big issues. Especially since we were there in June (2015) so the semi-outdoors washrooms weren't a problem. We had no issues with the water. We did get to know the other guest pretty well too. The location is indeed not as convenient as people here make it seem. 15 min walking to the... More

Yes it is not close to the centre of kyoto and yes the neighbourhood is a bit dead after 9pm. But you can pinpoint that on a map before booking and its an easy transport by subway and bus. I guess it depenss what your looking for. I absolutely loved staying at Bon, the owner and his wife are adorable... More

There seems to be a consensus on how wonderful Guest House Bon is and yes there are some very charming things about this hostel but I think I need to point out that the reviews here seem a bit over enthusiastic, probably due to the fact that the owner is so nice. I also found the owner charming and helpful... More

We were there in the winter 2013, it is rather small but clean and really homely, the neighborhood is very quiet too, short walking distance to bus routes to take you to all attractions in Kyoto. Taniguchi-san is really nice, advised us on what to see and how to get there and wouldn't let us walk to the subway the... More

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay here at guesthouse bon, our host was extremely accommodating and friendly, he couldn't do enough for us even driving us to the tube station on the last day. When we arrived he gave us explanations of the transport system and sold us bus passes so we were able to get to all the sights of... More

The owner of the guesthouse is very informative. When we had a question he would listen carefully and go through the steps with us step by step. We also went for a Maiko-transformation photo shoot and he phoned the place for us so we could change our time. The map he sends you or that is available online is good... More

Iresidentialfirst solo travel and this place was recommended to me. I booked it through Hostelworld and inadvertently booked for a day later than I actually arrived. Instead of turning me away because they were full, they made up a room in their own house for my first night. The rooms are very comfortable, the kitchen well equipped, there are bikes... More

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighborhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
