I enjoyed my stay at Tomato. I got a private room with a bunk bed. The room was comparatively large and seemed clean. The hostel was easy to find from the train station, and the guy working there was nice and spoke English well.

Well the short story is we checked out after 15 minutes. I have previously stayed in cleaner more welcoming police cells. At least in a police cell you have an ensure toilet, and something more than a piece of wood on a child's bunkbed to sleep on. I didn't ask for a refund, just wanted to get out as fast... More

I stayed here only because of silver week when everything else was booked up. One night was spent in a twin room which was fine-no complaints there. Pillow a bit crap. After this-they said they didn't have any space for me-but I couldn't find anywhere to stay in Kyoto so I asked to reserve a space on the couch in... More

This guesthouse was located 10 minutes walk from Kyoto Station. The staff was so helpfull and friendly. Kitchen at ground floor. My room was triple sharing. They provide microwave; cooking appliance in the shared kitvhen. The bathroom and toilet was clean. We can use washing machine with minimal cost. Easy acces to kyoto station and other attractions. They provide direction... More

I checked into Tomato Guest House on the 30th May 2015 and got there late at about 8.50pm. As the reception closed at 9 I was unable to complain about the horror that was the room I was put into. There is no mattress on the bed, it is literally a wooden board with a cover on it that goes... More

I was here on february. It is not top... More

I stayed in this hostel 2 days, and I have to say that I just needed a place to sleep and rest while I organized my trip. The staff was able to communicate in English (something that unfortunately few places places in Japan have) and it was really friendly. It's a very convenient location, since it's located close to Kyoto... More

The place is well placed, just near the Kyoto station and the facilities provide you everything you need, rent bicycle also. However, the low price reflect the quality of stuffs : Smelly toilet, little futon. The good services that provide the staff erase all bad things. It's a hostel that worth it.

A very basic hostel. Booked due to everywhere else being full. Accommodation was quite old and so therefor cold even in April. There was a heater provided so that was certainly used whilst we stayed. Again showers etc old but met the needs of backpackers but accommodation was poor compared to all other similar priced accommodation we stayed in in... More

This is the worst hostel I ever been to. Smelled bad, something between wastes, smoke and mold. You could basically hear your neighbors breath. Bad service. If you want the reception to call a hostel, restaurant or what ever, prepare to pay for it.

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
