I checked into Tomato Guest House on the 30th May 2015 and got there late at about 8.50pm. As the reception closed at 9 I was unable to complain about the horror that was the room I was put into. There is no mattress on the bed, it is literally a wooden board with a cover on it that goes... More

I was here on february. It is not top... More

I stayed in this hostel 2 days, and I have to say that I just needed a place to sleep and rest while I organized my trip. The staff was able to communicate in English (something that unfortunately few places places in Japan have) and it was really friendly. It's a very convenient location, since it's located close to Kyoto... More

The place is well placed, just near the Kyoto station and the facilities provide you everything you need, rent bicycle also. However, the low price reflect the quality of stuffs : Smelly toilet, little futon. The good services that provide the staff erase all bad things. It's a hostel that worth it.

A very basic hostel. Booked due to everywhere else being full. Accommodation was quite old and so therefor cold even in April. There was a heater provided so that was certainly used whilst we stayed. Again showers etc old but met the needs of backpackers but accommodation was poor compared to all other similar priced accommodation we stayed in in... More

This is the worst hostel I ever been to. Smelled bad, something between wastes, smoke and mold. You could basically hear your neighbors breath. Bad service. If you want the reception to call a hostel, restaurant or what ever, prepare to pay for it.

Pubic hairs on the pillows. The sheets. The duvets. The beds. The floor. Different colour hairs from different people. Blonde hair, brown hair, black hair, asian hair. All over the sheets and pillows. Needless to say they don't bother cleaning it. I have travelled throughout Asia and this is without doubt the worst guesthouse I have ever had the displeasure... The staff is friendly (speaks English and is very helpful), the prices not so bad and the location (close to the main station) is very handy. BUT: the room was smelling like urinal cake, the Tatami floor was very uncomfortable (super thin mattress), the toilets smelled like urin, the entrances smelled like stinky feet and the whole look of the... Great place to stay if you're just looking for a bed with no frills. My friends and I stayed here a while back (Jan 2011) and were extremely happy with the thoughtful and helpful staff. They can speak English and are willing to assist you with directions, places to go etc. It's an easy 10 min walk to the station... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
