The place quite close to Kyoto station, 5-7 minutes walk. Staff can communicate in English although not very well. They are nice and honest. Our room was clean and cozy in 90% Japanese + 10% city style with bathroom inside. Yukata dresses were also available in the room. Their mattress was surprisingly comfortable.

We stayed here for 3 nights in early April 2014 as part of a 2 week trip visiting Japan. This is a city-based traditional ryokan so please don't expect a western style room with Japanese flare. It is in a central location less than 10 minutes walk from Kyoto Station. On arrival, we were warmly greeted by a gentleman at... More

My husband and I stayed here 3 nights in late March, after spending a week in traditional guest houses throughout Japan. The place was clean, with an en-suite bathroom which was cool (almost like an airplane bathroom but with a tub and shower). The futon's were great and the front desk which didn't speak any English at all, tried to... More

My daughter and I spent three nights in this ryokan, the first and only on the our week trip. Compared to some, this is not pretty from the outside. However, the rooms work well and despite having no English of note, the staff are very friendly and try hard to help you. The breakfast was very interesting and worth a... More

Central location, very easy to get around by walking and mass transit. Very close to Kyoto Station. Nice customer service and affordable ryokan experience. The rooms were clean and futon bedding was soft and comfortable. The onsen hot water baths on the top floor are a neat touch. I only wish the food had be more affordable so we could... More

This hotel with tatami rooms is not bad, it's close to Kyoto main train station (but quite far from the city center) and the owners are really kind (but they barely speak a few words of English). The hotel and the rooms look are pretty ugly and not so clean, expecially the ensuite bathroom. There is a public bath for... More

We do enjoy staying in Wakamiya. It takes5-8 mins walk from the inn to Kyoto station. There are some restaurant and convienience store nearby. You can sleep well here as it's quite quiet in the night. Staffs are caring and helpfeul, they prepare you a hot towel and snacks when you're back. Free wifi and a computer is available at... More

The ryokan is very functional, has everything you would expect (including wireless internet, no laundry though). If there was air-con in the room we could not work out how to use it, but opening the window did the trick for us. Didn't use the onsen. The staff were very helpful. Easy access to the station, if you take the subway... More

We stayed at Wakamiya for 1 night and was disappointed at what we got. The room was quite small - and while we were fine with the size it seemed a tad too small considering the price we paid of 10,500 yen, dinner and breakfast included. We have stayed at other ryokans at similar prices that had a huge room... More

We felt looked after at this little Ryokan. It was not beautiful but the staff were caring, the beds were made up and the linen was lovely. The lady took us up to our room and made us green tea when we arrived. There was always hot water available in the room. The bedding was put away each day and... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
