Fabulous location with family owned ryokan on a quiet side street but in the heart of Gion area, with gorgeous traditional wooden buildings, shrines and temples very close by - not to mention a few pretty Maiko who were seen in surrounding streets. Lovely hosts - very welcoming, and helpful. Beautiful tatami mat rooms w dreamlike futons, yukata and pamper... More

This was our first ryokan experience. A very friendly family run concern, very helpful, English not too good. Lovely location in the old part of kyoto, good for walking around and close to buses. Very clean, nice touches, a snack box with tea and coffee, biscuits. Fresh flowers in the room.water and a fresh fruit surprise in the evening after our... More

Great Japanese traditional lodge (Ryokan) in the heart of ancient Kyoto's gion area, walk out the hotel and you will think you have traveled back 200 years with its narrow streets, other Ryokans, temples, shops and restaurants and many Geisha in traditional Kimono. Friendly english speaking staff. Traditional Japanese tatami room only furniture is a low table with hot water... More

This family run Ryokan was a fantastic experience. Everyone at the hotel was EXTREMELY helpful, always going out of the way to help with directions, information on Kyoto or ANYTHING that we needed. The room was clean and fine, and the location was very close to everything, and many bus/subway stops... I felt the price was a little high compared... More

This is a great family run small hotel of 3 stories, but main attraction is central location among all Gion sites. Every time we walked out of the door (family with 2 teens), we were grateful for how close we were to so many interesting cultural places to visit, plus the commercial areas. Traditional style room (do some yoga to... More

Kyoto's ryokans are really hard to book. Sano was the last ryokan I booked for my Kyoto trip. I was so in luck to have stayed in Sano. Awesome awesome location, near everything, loads of sights to see and loads of bus stops. In the night the gion was so charming and soft, and Sano is right in the heart... More

We stayed four nights in Gion Sano ryokan while visiting Kyoto. The ryokan is located in Gion area, nearby Yasaka Shrine. The location was quite ideal, since Gion represents the traditional wooden house district and it was easy to explore the rest of Kyoto from there as well. The ryokan was quite easy to find (we used train & metro... More

We stayed at Gion Sano for two nights at a room only rate, so we didn't have any meals, so I can't comment on that. It was our first time at a ryokan, so our experience is most likely also skewed from that perspective. The location was very nice, right next to Yasaka Shrine, and Gion where many shops and... More
