A nice place to stay. It's in a lovely location in the hills, aka at the top of a hill if you're walking! The service and rooms were good, however when we stayed last month the gardens were closed. I am vegetarian so they very kindly prepared me a veggie dinner, although not quite sure what any of it was!... More

Dear PMaccca, Thank you very much for staying with us in May and we appreciate your words in this website. We are sorry about our garden being closed. It closes depending upon conditions to be safe for our guests. About menu, we normally provide guests with an English menu, however, we are very sorry we didn't when we stayed. We... More

My partner and I recently visited nenrinbo ryokan and we both agreed it was fantastic. The service is top notch and we were very well looked after (especially with breakfast and dinner included). Speaking of food, by the last night we had to leave dinner early because of so much good food we couldn't finish. The staff were all extremely... More

Wonderful ryokan in the northern hills above central Kyoto. I came as a solo traveler during cherry blossom season and was rewarded with a stunning view of a tree in full flower outside of my room. Utterly quiet, peaceful and beautifully designed. This was the perfect ryokan experience.

We really enjoyed the Ryokan experience in Kyoto, the hotel has lovely views (mountain & cherry trees), great staff, indoor clean public bath overlooking mountains and amazing Japanese cuisine (both breakfast and dinner included). Overall, it was a lovely experience. Although it’s far away from the centre (we went by taxi), it’s worth the good views & natural surroundings!

We stayed here 2/14/15 and 2/15/15 and were so absolutely impressed with the level of service we received from every single member of the staff. Most notably, Takahashi san and Noriki san. What amazed me the most about them and Japanese people in general, is that their hospitality and kindness are not driven by tips. In fact one does not... More

Very nice ryokan in Kyoto: excellent and helpful staff, superb Japanese food, great cleanliness. We enjoyed the food and the wonderful public bath. Spending a night in a ryokan is a must during a holiday in Japan: Nerimbo is warmly recommended! The only bad aspect is that the ryokan is a little far from Kyoto centre.

I booked this ryokan spontaneously due to a change of plans, and was more than pleasantly surprised. It's tucked away in a quiet residential area near some mountains, so it's not all that accessible by bus/train, but that worked for us as we enjoyed the peace and quiet. It's near enough to Kinkaku-ji and a few other shrines/temples, and quite... More

Stayed for 3 nights, service was excellent, and without spoiling it for most, they had some other services not found in conventional hotels. Rooms were pretty good and stylish, yet looks traditional. Meals are quality, and of huge quantities of Japanese food. You might not like the food if you're not used to their traditional food, as it is really traditional Japanese... More

Staying in Northern Kyoto

Neighborhood Profile
Northern Kyoto
Hot springs and historic temples characterize the leafy landscapes of Northern Kyoto. Acres of tranquil residential streets are interrupted by some of Kyoto's most gorgeous architectural gems, including the majestic Golden Pavilion of Kinkakuji, the serene artistry of the Ryoanji Temple rock gardens, and the bold red paint across the structures of Enryakuji Temple. Once a religious core of the city, the district now boasts some of its most remote and peaceful hot springs, as well as a few of its best family-run mom-and-pop restaurants. A blend of extremely local at its outskirts, and highly peopled at its tourist centers, Northern Kyoto nonetheless retains a halcyon air in harmony with nature.
