Our taxi driver took us straight to Sakanoue (I think about a 15min cab ride from Kyoto station). Don't knock on the door underneath the sign. Walk up to the next open doorway and you'll find Sakanoue. (The poor woman who lives underneath the sign was polite but we felt so bad for disturbing her unnecessarily.) From the moment we... More

We spent one night in this Ryokan. The location is very good in the old Kyoto / Gion area Where you can enjoy the charm of traditional Japan. The ryokan is great, food valuable and staff nice. Some issues in English communication which can create some difficulties when it is time to discuss food and interactions. One small other negative... More

Wow! 3 night in a Roykan with 2 kids (aged 8 and 10) - and the kids would have happily stayed for longer. Cost was 12000 yen (£70 ish) per person per night B&B. Breakfast was delicious (served to start between 7 and 9 in your own private room) - we sampled western and Japanese. Dinner was amazing on the... More

We stayed here for 1 night with our two children. We wanted to stay in a traditional ryokan for the experience and didn't have great expectations about comfort. The Inn is very charming. The rooms are quite large and the separate bathroom was of a good size. The shower room had a wooden bathtub but we didn't use it as... More

This inn is Japanese traditional style is simple but perfect. Lovely welcome and very comfortable. We had the Japanese breakfast in the room which was very interesting but set me up for the day. The futon beds are lovely and cosy. Location is perfect.

It's is the greatest traditional hotel I have lived, the Japanese breakfast is delicious and delicate. Location is very convenient. Room is spacious and clear. I stayed there for 5 days and it's a wonderful experience.

We stayed here for 3 or 4 nights in August 2014. The neighborhood is lovely and the ryokan has a nice homey feel. Service was impeccable. Highlights included the beautiful flower arrangements that would appear magically when we returned from sightseeing, Japanese sweets and smoky tea in the afternoon, Japanese and Western style breakfasts (you can choose a different style... I really can not say enough good things about Sakanoue. The staff were amazing and the Ryokan beautiful. The photos posted online really don't do the place justice. The location is amazing as well -close to temples, parks and shopping. I've lived and traveled throughout Asia for the past years and I can honestly say this is one of the... More

My wife, daughter, and I stayed here for one night in mid October. What a great experience. You feel like you have gone back in time. The area has an old Japan feel with the wooden buildings and cobble streets. You are greeted at the from desk by english speaking young lady. She turns you over to Hatsuko (I believe... More

Sakanoue is very centrally located in the Higashiyama area. The closest stop is the Kawaramachi station ( Hankyu Line) along Shijo Dori. We took a taxi from the station since we had a few luggages, and it only costs ¥585 (about 5 minute's walk). Tokyo Station is quite far, about 30 minute's taxi ride. I had booked directly from their... More
