I stayed in Sakanoue traditional Ryokan - and didn't expect such an amazing Kaiseki experience! they served an amazing dinner (with Fugu sashimi and other amazing delicacies!) We had a good experience - but the food is definitely the star! The staff are so nice and helpful, the area is filled with amazing food and nite life - along with... More

Spent 2 nights in this traditional ryokan: handsome and large bedroom, nice and professional staff who speaks a reasonable english, great in-room service for bed setting (stored in the morning and set up in the evening on request) and breakfast. Sleeping on the floor on the soft futon is quite an experience, but you sleep reasonably well. The bathroom is... More

Sakanoue offers an authentic ryokan experience at a relatively affordable price. The experience itself is very simple and minimalist, which is what one should expect of a ryokan stay. The service was discreet and the staff was smiling and friendly. The reception manager (who spoke pretty good English) was very helpful and helped us book dinner at a restaurant where... More

We stayed at the sakanoue Kyoto. We took a taxi from the Kyoto station for 1500 yen to reach the hotel. The place is very clean, rooms are spacious, service is very good. Dinner while it offers the traditional experience and the cuisine was hard for us to appreciate. They had quill balls, barracuda etc., for non veg menu which... More

This review is a little late. We stayed at the Sakanoue in December 2014 after seeing the reviews on Tripadvisor. It was a unique and enjoyable experience. We booked the kaiseki meal included in our accommodation. The Kaiseki was incredible. Such intricately prepared food and so much of it. The staff were friendly and moved around very quietly (They were... More

We just left Kyoto and are now in a western style hotel in Tokyo. In many ways, we wish we were back at sakanoue. Although sleeping on the floor takes a bit of getting used to, the service and kindness of the staff was amazing and the location just can't be beat. The western breakfast isn't that great but I... Would not have missed this experience for the world...old time Japan. Sleeping on tatami with futons (although husband did not like); eating on floor with the most unusual foods and artistry ever. Should choose one night to eat at the hotel...was absolutely worth every cent. Great service although language and understanding is always an issue. Said there was internet, but... More

We stayed for two nights in Sakanoue the first week of June traveling with our two elementary school boys . The location of this ryokan is amazing as it is right next to Muruyama Park and Choin-in Temple. You can also take the walking path to Kiyomizu Temple from here. The staff is wonderful. Before booking I had several questions... More

Elegant, small 6-tatami mat room with en suite bathroom and a teeny but lovely Japanese viewing garden. Family onsen was worth it. Breakfast was delicious. The inn keeper was gracious. The location in Gion is a 5-minute walk from the cutest tea shops and scenic temples.

We wanted a Gion location for a night during Sakura season. It is an unbeatable location for this purpose, with most attractions within walking distance. Rates were competitive for Sakura season and perhaps reflective of some of my comments below. I did not love th experience here. Everything from room to service to food was average compared to other ryokan... More
