We stayed for 2 nights. The location is great, opposite Kyoto Station. The building is quite run down and all furniture and fittings are old. Smokers are allowed in the hotel lobby and rooms. Although we did not smell any smoke in the room but the corridor smelt of strong smoke smell. Shoes not allowed in the hotel, you have... More

Nice and central place. Very close to the main station. Everything you need is around. Really friendly and helpful staff (Grazie )! We had a small room with a cattle and an own small bathroom included. Also a public bath is available, seperated for women and men. Stayed two nights. Everything was quite clean.

Ryokan are meant to represent the very best of Japanese dining and accommodation. Unfortunately, this ryokan falls far short of the quality I have experienced in other establishments across Japan. At just over 32,000 yen for two people for one night this represented one of the more expensive ryokans I have stayed in. While I'm well aware you can pay... More

We stayed here for 3 nights, it was good but some people on our floor was loud and smoking. :( I guess hotel people can't make them upset. So we bore the situation a bit.

The room was modestly but neatly laid out, the bathroom was clean though small. The traditional Japanese breakfast prepared was quite tasty, with a pleasing variety. The staff always kindly provided extra utensils and bowls for our 6 month old baby to play with. Not luxurious by any standards, but it was sufficient for our purposes. It was initially a... More

The good points of this Ryokan were that it was near the Kyoto Station and the bus terminal. It was very convenient for us because we needed to take Shinkansen, JR train, city train and city bus. And, the staff was polite and helpful. They would come to our room to help us refill boiled water upon requested. We could... More

Staying in Shimogyo-ku

Neighborhood Profile
Shimogyo-ku
Shimogyo-ku is centered around the busy train hub, Kyoto Station. A nexus for commerce, shopping, dining, and hotels, the Shimogyo-ku area is infused with tourists and local business travelers, making it a competitive location for ever-new commercial structures. The shops and cafes here are chic and trendy, as a result, with many recognizable chains. Commuters flood the Shimogyo-ku area twice a day, and with Kyoto Station itself being a modern mega-complex and an architectural marvel, this neighborhood is one of the most contemporary and energetic areas that the city has to offer. Buildings here look futuristic, and huge department stores, shopping arcades, and public meeting spaces provide every possible convenience. It is also nearly the only place in Kyoto where rooftop dining and socializing is available, completing its modern tone.
