Staff were very welcoming and spoke good English. Breakfast included was delicious and served in dining room with separate cubicles so good for travelling alone. Also private enough to wear Japanese style dressing gown and slippers. Near Gion area river shops and temples close to Sanjo subway. Had a view of the river from my room. Also own little indoor... Strange that Tripadvisor ratings go from 3=average to 4=very good. I would rate this hotel as quite good. It is a traditional Japanese hotel so do not expect English TV or western things. Breakfast was nice and well-served. Room was quiet and clean. There is a strict adherence to check-in and check-out times in Japan. They called our room at... More

We came for Obon week and only spent a night here. It was a lovely night, the people who work here changed our room and set up the beds while we were out and about. They had complimentary tea, robes to wear in the room, slippers, toiletries, refrigerator, and a public bath. The next morning they held our bags there... More

The hotel other than provided us a very great experience of traditional Japanese style living, with the typical Japanese tatami room type, it also provided a very authentic Japanese style breakfast every day. In addition, the hotel is located at a very strategic location. It is just a few minutes walk to the nearest subway station and also other famous... More

I wanted to try a Ryokan in Kyoto and actually I feel this was the best bet as you get the experience, and I was still able to have my own shower and bathroom and tons and tons of space. The photos online and lack of furniture made it hard to judge the space. It was bigger than I thought.... More

Room is considered spacious (in japan's standard) and very clean, people are generally nice and responsive although they cannot speak much English. Live the location as one the left hand is the river and a lot of attractions with walking distance, on the right hand side is the city area with a lot if shopping areas and good restaurant. 10... Pros: - It's a ryokan (Japanese traditional hotel) but it's actually a new building so the facilities are very modern (Japanese style hi-tech toilet, modern bathroom, elevator). - Location is right in the middle of the action in Kyoto, next to a Starbucks, steps away from the river (forgot the name but everybody hangs out there), 15 mins walk to... My hubby and I stayed there for a couple of nights and we've had no complaints whatsoever. Great location, yummy Japanese styled breakfast, spacious ryokan styled room as expected. Services were fine we thought; we had no problems checking in/out and our "futon" beddings were made on time each night etc. Although they did have a tendency to let themselves... More

My 2 friends and I booked this place way in advance in January and travelled from Tokyo with high hopes of the Japanese hospitality and great service. We arrived only to be greeted by 2 persons and told - we have bad news, the hotel is fully booked and no rooms for you. In great disbelief we said that we... More

Staying in City Center

Neighborhood Profile
City Center
No district of Kyoto is quite as representative of its blended nature as the City Center. By day, the covered shopping arcades along Kawaramachi and Shijo Street bring deal hunters and fashionistas out in droves to peruse the clothing, accessories, gifts, and home goods offerings. When it grows dark, the City Center is a hip spot for nightlife, alive with bars and clubs. A trendy culinary scene and an abundance of local watering holes give the Center its youthful vibrancy. In contrast, the quieter areas of the City Center seem a world away, shielded from noise by the foliage of the public gardens and zen spaces surrounding the area's shrines, castles, and the Imperial Palace. These ancient and sacred spots are seamlessly folded into the scenery, providing a respite from the energy of the city, but close enough to put you directly back onto the pulse of the city when you're ready.
