On our trip around Japan we decided to stay in completely different types of accommodation in every city, and this ryokan seemed very fitting for Kyoto. The rooms are quite large with a separate seating area with green tea, the bed area has tatami mats and bedding, and they give you fantastic free yukata and slippers that you are invited... More

I stayed at Tozankaku during my two-day trip to Kyoto and was impressed by the place. Lovely green surroundings, kind staff and a cozy Japanese-style room with tatami(can get a bit uncomfortable if you're used to a very soft bed but I really enjoyed the authentic experience). The room itself was fairly large and comfortable. The best thing, however, was... More

Stayed for 3 nights and four days around Christmas time - excellent package including Shinkansen, twin bedded room with option of futon, including breakfasts and the largest Japanese communal bath in Kyoto. Excellent gift shop with Kyoto area crafts and products at fair prices. Friendly and helpful staff. Convenient location next door to the National Museum, 5 minute walk from... More

The hotel is easy walking distance to the Gion district and Kiyomizu temple. We stayed in a Japanese style room, which was great, and it overlooked the courtyard garden. However, our girls were horrified to realize that the room had no bath or shower; the only option was to use the public bath. I did not realize this when I... More

We stayed here over Easter while visiting my son at university in Kyoto. We booked a Japanese room - tatami mat, no bed. We wanted the authentic experience and we weren't disappointed. The room was fairly large, comfortable, and we overlooked the Japanese gardens below. Listening to the trickling waterfalls below was a great way to get off to sleep.... More

Hotel Tozankaku was about a half-hour walk to the heart of the city. The accommodations were Western-style. The food was reasonable. The staff were very kind. Overall, the hotel was a decent place from which to enjoy Kyoto, but I wouldn't stay here again as it didn't have much character.

Visiting japan from america. I rented two rooms at this hotel. One was a western style room which was my parents room and the second room for me and my wife and 2 kids was a Japanese style room. I know what to expect when getting a Japanese room. The usual tatami mat, no bed, instead a futon is taken... More
